The Bologna Performing Arts Center will welcome \u201cSleeping Beauty\u201d to the stage Tuesday, April 25 at 7:30 p.m. To be performed by The Russian National Ballet Theatre, the performance will take place in the BPAC\u2019s Delta and Pine Land Theatre on the campus of Delta State University. <\/P>
Based on Charles Perrault’s well-known fairy tale, “Sleeping Beauty” is considered to be the crown jewel in the career of choreographer Marius Petipa and one of the finest achievements of classical ballet. Russian composer Pytor Ilyich Tchaikovsky wrote the score, which includes the beloved Sleeping Beauty Waltz. <\/P>
First premiering in 1890, Tchaikovsky’s \u201cSleeping Beauty\u201d is a full-length ballet presented in three acts. The fairy tale is replete with a king and queen, good and evil fairies, a beautiful princess and dream prince, magical stage effects and courtly splendor. <\/P>
\u201cIf you\u2019ve never seen ballet before, this is the one to catch,\u201d says David Dallas of the Bologna Performing Arts Center. \u201cThe music will be familiar to most and the story is fun to follow.\u201d<\/P>
The Russian National Ballet was founded in Moscow during the transitional period of \u201cPerestroika,\u201d when many of the great dancers and choreographers of the Soviet Union’s ballet institutions were exercising their newfound creative freedom by starting new, vibrant companies. Under the direction of Sergei Radchenko, legendary Bolshoi dancer, the Russian National Ballet has focused on upholding the tradition of the major Russian ballet works and developing new talents throughout Russia.<\/P>
According to the London Telegraph, “The Russian National Ballet Theatre is the most exciting contribution to Russian ballet since the establishment of the Bolshoi Ballet.” <\/P>
