Twenty-two \t\t\tRobertson Scholars from the University of North Carolina (UNC) and \t\t\tDuke University recently dedicated a day of service in the \t\t\tMississippi Delta in her honor of Josie Robertson, who died this \t\t\tpast year.  <\/span><\/p>\n

The \t\t\tRobertson Scholars Program was created in 2000 through a $24 million \t\t\tgift from Julian Robertson, a 1955 graduate of UNC and his wife \t\t\tJosie. Inspired by their sons, one of whom graduated from Duke in \t\t\t1998 and another who graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill in 2001, the \t\t\tRobertson’s wanted to encourage further collaboration between the \t\t\ttwo universities. The establishment of this innovative program, \t\t\twhich recruits and supports undergraduates on both campuses, was \t\t\tdesigned to serve as a catalyst for increased collaboration between \t\t\tstudents, faculty, and staff of the two universities. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

The Scholars \t\t\tare engaged in summer internships in four locations:  Appalachian \t\t\tKentucky, New Orleans, Atlanta, and the Mississippi Delta. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

They converged \t\t\ton Cleveland to sort through thousands of books that have been sent \t\t\tto the Delta by the Harry Potter Alliance to be distributed through \t\t\tcharities across the Delta. They were assisted in this Herculean \t\t\ttask by students of the Sunflower County Freedom Project, and the \t\t\tservice activities were coordinated by Jessica Broadus and Tori \t\t\tWilmarth, the two Robertson Scholars who are interning in the Delta \t\t\tState University Delta Center for Culture and Learning this summer. \t\t\t<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

Following \t\t\ttheir day of service, the group was given a Delta Heritage tour lead \t\t\tby Delta Center staff, which included stops at Dockery Farms, the \t\t\tgrave of Mrs. Fannie Lou Hamer, and historic Mound Bayou.  <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

During the \t\t\ttour they talked about the Delta’s agricultural heritage and its \t\t\trightful claim to being the birthplace of both the Blues and Rock \t\t\t‘n’ Roll. The Scholars also visited Po’ Monkey’s Lounge, hosted a \t\t\tpotluck dinner for the Greenville Renaissance Scholars, ate a lot of \t\t\tMississippi Delta catfish, and spent a night dancing to the Blues at \t\t\tRed’ Lounge in Clarksdale.  <\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
