Delta State \t\t\tUniversity has been named to the 2009 President’s Higher Education \t\t\tCommunity Service Honor Roll joining Mississippi State University \t\t\tand the University of Southern Mississippi as the only public \t\t\tuniversities in the state to be recognized for this honor<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The \t\t\tPresident’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll recognizes \t\t\tinstitutions of higher education that support exemplary, innovative, \t\t\tand effective community service programs.  <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

Delta State’s \t\t\tDelta Center for Culture and Learning through its Office of Student \t\t\tand Community Engagement and the Delta Volunteers (a United Way \t\t\tagency) sponsored service events in January to commemorate Martin \t\t\tLuther King, Jr. Day and in March, when it offered an Alternative \t\t\tSpring Break service project. The Delta Center also sponsored the \t\t\tLighthouse Heritage After-School Program at D.M. Smith Middle \t\t\tSchool, which provided tutoring, arts and heritage activities to low \t\t\tincome students. Delta State has long been a leader in \t\t\tservice-learning and civic engagement in the community. Last year, \t\t\t1,379 students clocked 56,833 service hours.  Delta State also \t\t\toffers around 25 courses each semester that incorporate service into \t\t\tthe curriculum. "I am pleased \t\t\tthat Delta State has, once again, been recognized to receive this \t\t\tprestigious honor” stated Dr. John Hilpert, President of Delta State \t\t\tUniversity. “Receiving national recognition is very rewarding and \t\t\tconfirms the strong commitment of our faculty and students to \t\t\tpromote community involvement and participate in such worthwhile \t\t\tinitiatives.”<\/span><\/p>\n

The Honor Roll \t\t\trecognizes a wide diversity of higher education institutions for \t\t\ttheir community service programs, practices, and community \t\t\tpartnerships. It is administered by Learn and Serve America at the \t\t\tCorporation for National and Community Service, and the U.S. \t\t\tDepartments of Education and Housing and Urban Development. Many \t\t\thigher education associations, including Campus Compact and the \t\t\tAmerican Council on Education, also support and promote the Honor \t\t\tRoll.<\/span><\/p>\n

The \t\t\tCorporation for National and Community Service is a federal agency \t\t\tthat improves lives, strengthens communities, and fosters civic \t\t\tengagement through service and volunteering. The Corporation \t\t\tadministers Senior Corps, AmeriCorps and Learn and Serve America, a \t\t\tprogram that supports service-learning in schools, institutions of \t\t\thigher education and community-based organizations.
