The AmeriCorps*VISTA program provides an invaluable opportunity for individuals to not only serve the communities in which they live, but to contribute to a legacy of socioeconomic transformation that was established 45 years ago.  Its unrelenting fight against poverty has changed the lives of impoverished citizens across the Mississippi Delta. The greatest satisfaction, however, lies in the hearts of the members themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n

From the overflowing fulfillment that stems from selflessly serving others to the incomparable experience that warrants its own ovation, Tashondra Jones, a current VISTA member with the Center for Community and Economic Development at Delta State University, affirms first-hand this incredible adventure. Jones has diligently served over two years as a member. Recalling her service with AmeriCorps*VISTA, she never dreamed her life’s journey would include such a scenic route.  “I never thought I would be able to write a grant proposal and successfully fund a community project.  I’ve really been able to enhance my professional skills from the training I’ve received through this program. The training covers a large spectrum, including asset management and project coordination.  I don’t have a college degree, so without the AmeriCorps*VISTA program, I wouldn’t have received this kind of knowledge.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Like Jones, many other members have testimonies that attest to the rewarding experience that comes from joining the AmeriCorps*VISTA program.  There are currently several openings in the Bolivar, Leflore, Sunflower, Warren, and Washington County areas that must be filled immediately. Interested parties should complete and submit an online application at www.americorps.org<\/span><\/a><\/span> to be considered for membership.<\/span><\/p>\n

Upon becoming an AmeriCorps*VISTA member, individuals will receive adequate hands-on training to serve in their positions “to strengthen and supplement efforts to eliminate and alleviate poverty.”  Members are also the recipients of substantial benefits. These benefits include a living allowance paid bi-weekly, health and life insurance, and work-related travel reimbursement. Contingent with service completion, members may choose either a $5,350 education award or a $1,500 cash stipend.<\/span><\/p>\n

The AmeriCorps*VISTA program is unique in its composition and is looking for potential members. According to Jones, “It’s not about the money. The experience is truly priceless. This program builds professional skills and creates job-readiness that gives me confidence to enter the career market. I would definitely recommend VISTA membership to anyone who’s undecided about applying.”<\/span><\/p>\n
