Delta State University’s History Department will offer a new upper-level undergraduate and graduate course entitled “Civil Rights in the Mississippi Delta” for the 2010 spring semester.<\/font><\/p>\n

The course will meet on Thursday’s from 6-9 p.m. beginning Jan.14, 2010, with registration to begin Tuesday. Nov. 3.  <\/span><\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
Participants in the course will receive three hours of academic credit or CEU credit if preferred.<\/span><\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
The course will cover issues of race and social change from the post-Reconstruction period through the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s to more recent times.  <\/span><\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
While particular attention will be paid to developments in this region such as sharecropping, the Emmett Till murder case and the work of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, the course will also look at the wider social and political context, in Mississippi and across the country. <\/span><\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
The course will involve rigorous academics, multi-media instruction, guest lectures from former participants in the civil rights movement, and experiential learning, among other features.  <\/span><\/div>\n
