Friends and family, along with <\/SPAN><SPAN>Delta<\/SPAN><SPAN> <\/SPAN><SPAN>State<\/SPAN><SPAN> faculty and staff, gathered to honor the accomplishments of the 359 <\/SPAN><SPAN>Delta<\/SPAN><SPAN> <\/SPAN><SPAN>State<\/SPAN><SPAN> graduates.<\/SPAN><\/P><P><SPAN><\/SPAN><SPAN>After welcoming an overflowing crowd, Delta State President, Dr. John M. Hilpert, remarked, \u201cEach of today\u2019s graduates has reached a milestone, and we are here to recognize their achievements. On behalf of the faculty and staff, I extend congratulations to all graduates.&nbsp; I urge you to view your college education as a trust that commits you to a lifetime of learning and service.<\/SPAN><\/P><P><SPAN>\u201cThis nation and the state of <\/SPAN><SPAN>Mississippi<\/SPAN><SPAN> need the benefit of the skills and learning that you have acquired here,\u201d he continued.&nbsp; \u201cWe send you into the world with our deep affection and wish for each of you the fullest measure of success.\u201d<\/SPAN><\/P><P><SPAN>Dr. Lynn Varner, Director and Chair of the newly formed Center for Rural School Leadership and Research at Delta State and 2005 Kossman Award recipient, delivered the keynote address, offering, \u201cWhen I won the Kossman Award last year I was totally shocked and thrilled and then, just after the ceremony, it hit me &#8211; I\u2019ll have to give the address at graduation in December. So, I did what any good faculty member would do &#8211; I panicked. What could I possibly say to a group of graduates that they would care to hear? I\u2019ve heard some truly awe-inspiring speeches in my life and I really wanted to deliver one of those.\u201d<\/SPAN><\/P><P><SPAN>Varner explored \u201cThe Four Agreements of Life\u201d from Don Miguel Ruiz\u2019s <I>Four Agreements<\/I> during her address. Ruiz has written several books and millions of people have used his code of conduct to transform their ordinary lives into ones filled with freedom, true happiness and love. As outlined in her talk, the four agreements urge all to 1. Be impeccable with your word; 2. Don\u2019t take anything personally; 3. Don\u2019t make assumptions; and 4. Always do your best.<\/SPAN><\/P><P><SPAN>One doctor of education degree and 13 educational specialist degrees were conferred during the commencement exercise, while numerous master\u2019s and bachelor\u2019s degrees were awarded through the <\/SPAN><SPAN>College<\/SPAN><SPAN> of <\/SPAN><SPAN>Arts<\/SPAN><SPAN> and Sciences, the <\/SPAN><SPAN>College<\/SPAN><SPAN> of <\/SPAN><SPAN>Business<\/SPAN><SPAN>, the <\/SPAN><SPAN>College<\/SPAN><SPAN> of <\/SPAN><SPAN>Education<\/SPAN><SPAN> and the <\/SPAN><SPAN>School<\/SPAN><SPAN> of <\/SPAN><SPAN>Nursing<\/SPAN><SPAN>. <\/SPAN><\/P><P>&nbsp;<\/P><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Varner delivers keynote address<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":0,"featured_media":4197,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-112","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-general"],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/112","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=112"}],"version-history":[{"count":11,"href":"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/112\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":40485,"href":"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/112\/revisions\/40485"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/4197"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=112"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=112"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=112"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
