{"id":108,"date":"2010-07-23T10:58:40","date_gmt":"2010-07-23T10:58:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/2010\/07\/23\/varner-to-present-keynote-address-at-delta-states-fall-commencement\/"},"modified":"2013-09-03T12:56:44","modified_gmt":"2013-09-03T12:56:44","slug":"varner-to-present-keynote-address-at-delta-states-fall-commencement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/2010\/07\/varner-to-present-keynote-address-at-delta-states-fall-commencement\/","title":{"rendered":"Varner to present keynote address at Delta State\u2019s fall commencement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><P class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\"><SPAN><IMG height=\"216\" alt=\"\" src=\"\/images\/univ_relations\/Varner.jpg\" width=\"144\" border=\"0\"><\/SPAN><\/P><P class=\"MsoNormal\"><SPAN><\/SPAN>&nbsp;<\/P><P class=\"MsoNormal\"><SPAN>Delta<\/SPAN><SPAN> <\/SPAN><SPAN>State<\/SPAN><SPAN> <\/SPAN><SPAN>University<\/SPAN><SPAN>\u2019s 2005 Fall Commencement services will be held Saturday, Dec. 10, at <\/SPAN><SPAN>10 a.m.<\/SPAN><SPAN> inside Walter Sillers Coliseum on the DSU campus, with Dr. Lynn Varner to deliver the keynote address. <\/SPAN><\/P><P class=\"MsoNormal\"><SPAN><\/SPAN>&nbsp;<\/P><P class=\"MsoNormal\"><SPAN>Varner currently holds the post as director and chair of the newly formed Center for Rural School Leadership and Research at <\/SPAN><SPAN>Delta<\/SPAN><SPAN> <\/SPAN><SPAN>State<\/SPAN><SPAN>. She received a PhD in Educational Leadership from the <\/SPAN><SPAN>University<\/SPAN><SPAN> of <\/SPAN><SPAN>Mississippi<\/SPAN><SPAN> and has earned master\u2019s degrees in Counseling and in Educational Administration from <\/SPAN><SPAN>Delta<\/SPAN><SPAN> <\/SPAN><SPAN>State<\/SPAN><SPAN> <\/SPAN><SPAN>University<\/SPAN><SPAN> and a bachelor\u2019s degree from <\/SPAN><SPAN>Roanoke<\/SPAN><SPAN> (<\/SPAN><SPAN>Va.<\/SPAN><SPAN>) College. <BR><BR>Prior to her time at <\/SPAN><SPAN>Delta<\/SPAN><SPAN> <\/SPAN><SPAN>State<\/SPAN><SPAN>, Varner was an elementary school teacher, guidance counselor, and principal. An active scholar, she has presented at international, national, regional, and local conferences in her research areas of interest, which include year-round education, computer-managed instruction, technology, and accommodating learning disabilities. Now in her sixth year of service at <\/SPAN><SPAN>Delta<\/SPAN><SPAN> <\/SPAN><SPAN>State<\/SPAN><SPAN>, Varner received the 2004-2005 College of Education\u2019s Faculty Award for Outstanding Teaching, Service, and Research and the 2005 Kossman Award, the highest distinction a faculty member can be accorded at the University. <\/SPAN><\/P><P class=\"MsoNormal\"><SPAN><\/SPAN>&nbsp;<\/P><P class=\"MsoNormal\"><SPAN>Equally active in the <\/SPAN><SPAN>Cleveland<\/SPAN><SPAN> community, Varner serves on several boards and in leadership positions with her church, <\/SPAN><SPAN>Calvary<\/SPAN><SPAN> Episcopal. She and her husband, Bryan, have two daughters, Lane and Sarah, and reside in <\/SPAN><SPAN>Cleveland<\/SPAN><SPAN>.&nbsp; <\/SPAN><\/P><P class=\"MsoNormal\"><SPAN><\/SPAN>&nbsp;<\/P><P class=\"MsoNormal\"><SPAN>\u201cWhen I first moved to <\/SPAN><SPAN>Cleveland<\/SPAN><SPAN>, it became immediately obvious that <\/SPAN><SPAN>Delta<\/SPAN><SPAN> <\/SPAN><SPAN>State<\/SPAN><SPAN> played an integral part in the success of this community and the lives of all who live here,\u201d Varner offered. &nbsp;\u201cI\u2019ve been so fortunate to be involved with <\/SPAN><SPAN>Delta<\/SPAN><SPAN> <\/SPAN><SPAN>State<\/SPAN><SPAN> as a volunteer, graduate student, graduate assistant, assistant professor, and as a director\/chair. We have a very special place here because of our supportive, family-like atmosphere. I\u2019m extremely honored to give this commencement address.\u201d<\/SPAN><\/P><P class=\"MsoNormal\"><SPAN><\/SPAN>&nbsp;<\/P><P class=\"MsoNormal\"><SPAN>With a working title, \u201cThe Four Agreements of Life,\u201d Varner will explore Don Miguel Ruiz\u2019s <I>Four Agreements<\/I> during her keynote address. Ruiz has written several books and millions of people have used his code of conduct to transform their ordinary lives into ones filled with freedom, true happiness and love.<\/SPAN><\/P><P class=\"MsoNormal\"><SPAN><\/SPAN>&nbsp;<\/P><P class=\"MsoNormal\"><SPAN>Delta<\/SPAN><SPAN> <\/SPAN><SPAN>State<\/SPAN><SPAN> is expected to graduate approximately 360 graduates during its fall commencement exercise.
