CLEVELAND, Miss. \u2014\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Due to an impending winter storm\u00a0predicted\u00a0to\u00a0impact\u00a0the Mississippi Delta beginning Friday, January 23, Delta State University is implementing adjustments to classes and campus operations out of an abundance of caution for the safety and well-being of the campus community.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

All Delta State classes scheduled\u00a0<\/span>after 12:15 p.m. on Thursday, January 22, will transition to online instruction<\/span><\/b>.\u00a0All labs and classes with\u00a0clinical rotations\u00a0will be rescheduled\u00a0to\u00a0an\u00a0asynchronous online format.\u00a0Faculty\u00a0should communicate with students\u00a0regarding\u00a0course expectations through Canvas. Students who experience connectivity or power issues will not be penalized but should contact their instructor as soon as possible.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0<\/span>Delta State University campus will be closed on Friday, January 23<\/span><\/b>. Essential, critical services will continue to\u00a0operate\u00a0during the closure.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Residential\u00a0students:\u00a0<\/span><\/b>All residential students who are able and have a reliable place to stay with family or trusted friends are strongly encouraged to leave campus during this time. Leaving campus helps reduce risk\u00a0and\u00a0eases strain on essential\u00a0services, allowing\u00a0our staff and emergency personnel to focus on the students who must remain. If you are able, please consider bringing along a friend who may not have a safe or reliable place to go during this time. Please take any necessary personal items, medications, chargers, and academic materials with you.\u00a0While University staff will be reaching out to residents to confirm plans, we are asking residents to please call, text, or email your Hall Director or RA before\u00a0departing.\u00a0Students who are unable to leave campus will be supported, and additional guidance for those remaining in the residence halls will be shared.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Before leaving campus on Thursday, employees are asked to\u00a0<\/span>lock offices and buildings upon departure<\/span><\/b>. Facilities Management team members have begun distributing ice melt at building entrances and taking\u00a0additional\u00a0steps to prepare campus facilities for prolonged freezing temperatures.\u00a0During campus closures, buildings should remain locked at all times.\u00a0Anyone needing access to a campus building should contact the Delta State University Police Department at\u00a0<\/span>662-846-4155<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Decisions\u00a0regarding\u00a0scheduled athletic events will be posted on the Delta State Athletics website (<\/span>www.gostatesmen.com<\/span><\/b><\/a>) and through official social media channels. For the status of other scheduled university events, individuals should contact the event sponsor directly.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      The National Weather Service (NWS) in Jackson is predicting a significant winter weather event for the region, with freezing temperatures, mixed precipitation, and hazardous travel conditions possible. Forecasts\u00a0indicate\u00a0that temperatures are not expected to rise above freezing until at least Tuesday afternoon, making road conditions \u2013 particularly bridges and overpasses \u2013 potentially slick and dangerous.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      University leadership will meet over the weekend to assess conditions and\u00a0plan\u00a0for\u00a0<\/span>Monday, January 26, and beyond<\/span><\/b>. Because the situation\u00a0remains\u00a0fluid, the university will continue to closely\u00a0monitor\u00a0weather conditions and will provide\u00a0additional\u00a0updates as\u00a0new information\u00a0becomes available.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
