DESCRIPTION:STEAM-Night \n\n\n\nChildren in the region are invited to an electrifying evening at the upcoming S.T.E.A.M. night in the Mathews-Sanders Sculpture Garden on the front grounds of the Bologna Performing Arts Center. This exciting event is scheduled for Wednesday\, April 3rd\, from 4:30 to 6:30 PM and is free for all kids and families. \nS.T.E.A.M. Night centers around an elementary-level blend of Science\, Technology\, Engineering\, Art\, and Math activities\, offering attendees an opportunity to engage in hands-on exploration and experimentation. Each partner brings their own special activity to the evening\, showcasing the community’s spirit and commitment to special educational experiences for children throughout the Delta. \nAttendees can look forward to multiple activities designed to ignite curiosity and spark imagination. From testing their architectural and balance skills with Giant Jenga to witnessing explosive reactions during the Mentos and Coke experiment\, there’s something for everyone. Participants can also embark on a prehistoric adventure by digging for fossils or immersing themselves in the world of music at the music makers station. \nOne highlight of the event is the Bell Academy Sprouts garden demo\, where attendees can delve into the wonders of nature and learn more about gardening. Additionally\, thanks to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library with the Delta Health Alliance’s Kayleigh Jackson\, the evening will feature a Story Walk for Ada Twist\, Scientist\, a book in the popular children’s series by Andrea Beaty and students can follow the story while winding their way through the garden. A staged version of TheatreWorksUSA’s Ada Twist\, Scientist will hit the BPAC stage the following week for a special matinee performance on Tuesday\, April 9. Tickets are still available for purchase for the matinee performances at 9:30 and 11:30. \nPartnerships with local organizations include Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library with the Delta Health Alliance\, The Delta Health Alliance resource and Referral Center\, Delta Arts Alliance\, GRAMMY Museum Mississippi\, FlyZone Bell Academy Sprouts\, and Friends of the Cleveland School District. \n“We’re thrilled to host S.T.E.A.M. DESCRIPTION:DELTA STATE UNIVERSITY ART DEPARTMENT’S 2024 ANNUAL JURIED STUDENT EXHIBITION \nDSU’s Art Department will showcase its Annual Juried Student Exhibition from March 7 to April 18. This highly anticipated event allows the art department to highlight the work our students have produced over the past year. The exhibition also allows students to gain professional experience by preparing work for exhibitions and submitting it to a jury process. Students submitting work are also eligible to win monetary awards in various categories. The awards are made possible through the generous support of art patrons from the Cleveland community. \nThis year’s opening reception also marks the completion of an extensive renovation of the Fielding Wright Art Center funded by a grant from the Mississippi Arts Commission. \nThis year’s juror is Susan Maakestad. Maakestad is a Professor Emeritus of the Memphis College of Art where she taught from 1997-2020. She now works as an independent artist in the Memphis area. Her work is in public collections including the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art and the City of Memphis. She recently completed a large glass installation for the Memphis International Airport. \nAs every year\, the Annual Juried Student Exhibition will also feature a Salon des Refusés in the Holcomb-Norwood Annex which will display a selection of artwork that did not make it into the main event. The Salon des Refusés is inspired by a similar salon held in 1863 which featured work rejected by the academic selection committee. Yet\, some of these artists would go on to change the history of art. \nWe want to express our gratitude to the Mississippi Arts Commission for awarding us a grant to renovate our gallery as well as to the following sponsors for supporting our students and the department through the donation of awards: Dave Alford and Adventure Frames\, Maureen and Bucky Brooks\, Cleveland State Bank\, Betty Anne and Travis Cooper\, Catherine and Ron Koehler\, Bill Lester\, Carmen and Cetin Oguz\, Lisa Percy\, Planter’s Bank & Trust\, Carol Tatum\, as well as Dr. Ellen Green\, DSU’s Dean of the College of Arts and Science\, President Dr. Ennis\, and the President’s Cabinet. \nPlease join us in celebrating our students’ success on Thursday\, March 7\, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Awards will be presented at 6:00 p.m. The Annual Juried Student Exhibition will remain on view from March 7 to April 18. DESCRIPTION:HOLLOW TREE is a free documentary screening in the BPAC Recital Hall as part of the Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers. All screenings begin at 6:00pm. Hollow Tree follows three teenagers coming of age in their sinking homeland of Louisiana. For the first time\, they notice the Mississippi River’s engineering\, stumps of cypress trees\, and billowing smokestacks. Their different perspectives — as Indigenous\, white\, and Angolan young women — shape their story of the climate crisis. \nDirector’s Statement: This film invites three young women\, who did not previously know each other\, to learn with me and my filmmaking team\, and their respective communities. They travel to different sites along the Mississippi River\, where they engage in dialogue with engineers\, activists\, and Indigenous leaders. The idea was to use filmmaking as a classroom\, and to develop a documentary practice for the climate crisis. As I encourage the young people in my film to notice their surroundings\, they begin to imagine Louisiana’s past — its history of slavery\, Indigenous dispossession\, and colonization — and\, by extension\, Louisiana’s future. He is the Co-Director of the Center for the Study of the Gulf South and is a Dale Center for the Study of War and Society Fellow. Dr. Bristol’s talk is entitled “War as Labor: Mechanization\, Mobilization\, and the Changing Role of Black GIs in World War II” and is a look into his current research on Black GIs in World War II. \nThis program is financially assisted by the National Endowment for the Humanities through the Mississippi Humanities Council.
