SUMMARY:Lunch & Learn/Networking Session with Institute for Prenatal Quality Improvement
DESCRIPTION:David K. Jones\, PhD: Ripples of Hope: Charting the Health Equity Policy Agenda\nCo-editors Debra Bingham\, DrPH\, RN\, FAAN; Nicole Huberfeld\, JD; and Sarah Gordon\, PhD\, MS\nEating well is challenging when few grocery stores are nearby\, fresh foods are not affordable\, and time to prepare wholesome foods is limited. An active lifestyle is nearly impossible when parks are not nearby\, sidewalks do not connect\, and safety is an overriding issue. Generational wealth cannot be built when well-paying jobs are scarce\, banks do not give mortgage loans\, and available housing is low-quality and unsafe. A great education is a path to a better life but hard to obtain if too few teachers\, inadequate resources\, and improper and disproportionate discipline are the norm. Access to necessary medical care is limited when primary care providers are scarce\, each visit to a specialist requires three hours of\ndriving\, and high deductibles and other out of pocket costs consume a large share of annual income. The extremes of the Mississippi Delta illustrate the complex relationships between class\, race\, and health that make achieving health equity across the entire U.S. so difficult. Using qualitative methods\, including on-the-ground interviews with local residents\, advocates\, and officials\, as well as interdisciplinary research\, this book explores health in the Mississippi Delta to better understand health policy goals for the entire nation. Each of the five major chapters starts with a reflection from Robert F. Kennedy’s trip to the Delta in 1967. The chapters discuss the major barriers to health in five key domains: food\, neighborhoods\, jobs\, education\, and health care. Each chapter includes “Ripples of Hope\,” highlighting how local groups and individuals are working to overcome barriers to health\, as well as highlights root causes that must be addressed. The chapters end with principles and goals that should guide national and state policy action\, which are deliberately broad so as to be applicable in a variety of settings. \nStudents will be invited to a lunch and learn on February 8\, with a community networking opportunity on February. 9.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDate(s) of Event\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDate\nStart Time\nEnd Time\n\n\n\n\n02/08/2024\n12:00 pm\n2:00 pm\n\n\n02/09/2024\n6:00 pm\n8:00 pm

SUMMARY:Butterfly in the Sky
DESCRIPTION:BUTTERFLY IN THE SKY is a free documentary screening in the BPAC Recital Hall as part of the Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers. All screenings begin at 6:00pm. \nBUTTERFLY IN THE SKY tells the story of the beloved PBS children’s series “Reading Rainbow\,” its iconic host LeVar Burton\, and the challenges its creators faced in cultivating a love of reading through television. Two seconds into the bubbling synth sounds of its theme song will have a child of the 1980s or ‘90s exclaiming “Reading Rainbow!” Such is the beloved nature of the classic children’s literary television show that introduced millions of kids to the wonder of books. \nNot only did the series insist on having kids speak to kids about their favorite stories\, Reading Rainbow introduced the world to one of the most adored television hosts of all time\, LeVar Burton. Thanks to his direct\, non-patronizing and\, most importantly\, kind delivery\, Burton became a conduit to learning for children of every background – delving behind the pages to the people\, places\, and things each new story explored. \nSouthern Circuit screenings are funded in part by a grant from South Arts\, a regional arts organization\, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts. For more information about the Southern Circuit\, please visit www.southarts.org/southerncircuit.\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:KC and the Sunshine Band
DESCRIPTION:KC and the Sunshine Band has celebrated over 40 years of making booties shake. They gave a voice to a generation\, helped define an entire culture and continue to make an impact today. With over four decades of success\, the group\, led by Harry Wayne “KC” Casey\, has been in a state of constant renewal in their niche of cultural relevancy-thanks in part to their music being featured in numerous motion picture soundtracks\, television shows and national advertising campaigns. \nKC and the Sunshine Band formed in 1973 with one single purpose: to create instant happiness through music – and the group has done just that\, topping the charts with singles including “That’s the Way (I Like It)\,” “Get Down Tonight\,” and “(Shake\, Shake\, Shake) Shake Your Booty\,” tallying worldwide sales of over 100 million and receiving numerous awards. In 2013\, KC was honored with two distinct Lifetime Achievement Awards\, made several television appearances and earned a new start on the Palm Springs Walk of Fame in his home state of Florida\, which accompanies his previously awarded national recognition of a star on The Hollywood Walk of Fame. KC and the Sunshine Band continue to tour heavily throughout the U.S. and internationally\, as well as collaborate and appear with other superstars. \nGet tickets today at https://bolognapac.my.salesforce-sites.com/ticket#/events/a0S8Z00000GRa3kUAD

SUMMARY:Wiley Planetarium - Take a Leap with Us
DESCRIPTION:New show alert! Join us on February 15 and 16 for our new show\, ‘CapCom Go!: The Apollo Story’. If the weather is clear\, we’ll observe the moon after the show.
