DESCRIPTION:Filmed over the course of 11 years\, the film follows Curtis\, a bright and hopeful 12-year-old boy who grows up in rural Ohio surrounded by poverty\, love and hardship while every adult in his family battles addiction. \nThe film raises awareness and fosters understanding about the challenges faced by children and families caught in cycles of poverty\, intergenerational trauma\, and substance use disorder. This showing is FREE of charge and the community is welcome. Members include high schools\, community colleges\, public and private colleges and universities\, and professional English language schools. SUMMARY:The DSU Poverty Simulation
DESCRIPTION:The purpose of this event is to engage DSU faculty and staff in any discipline and people in the community (anyone over age 16) in an empathetic-action simulative learning experience about surviving in poverty so they can understand what it is like in order to improve their services at DSU and provide better assistance to students and others in the area who are struggling to live on very low incomes. Research indicates that the simulation significantly improves participants’ understanding about poverty\, shatters stereotypes\, and increases their empathy toward people living in poverty. The event is free. It lasts approximately 2 1/2 to 3 hours. Participants will need to dress comfortably and stay the whole time. Any faculty\, staff or student who has already participated in the Poverty Simulation is welcome to assist the DSU BSW Program faculty in implementing the service tables during the simulation if they come at noon on the day of the simulation to get set up.

DESCRIPTION:Every year\, the Madison Center for Civic Engagement and History partners with the School of Arts\, Humanities\, and Social Sciences hosts a public open mic reading of the US Constitution in recognition of Constitution Week (September 17-23\, annually). The public reading of the US Constitution is a direct recreation of how the Constitution was originally spread through the country and made publicly known. This year makes the 238th anniversary of its creation on September 17\, 1787. \nAll are welcome to take part in this event that celebrates the world’s oldest active codified constitution.

A native of Greenville\, Mississippi\, Nash has worked with and written about Mississippi politics for over 45 years. He has coauthored three books of Mississippi history\, including America’s Great Storm coauthored with Gov. Haley Barbour about Hurricane Katrina and Mississippi Politics: The Struggle for Power\, 1976-2006\, with Andy Taggart—which won awards from the Mississippi Historical Society and the Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters. \nReconstruction in Mississippi\, 1862-1877\, is a comprehensive history of the struggle to define freedom in Mississippi after the Civil War. DESCRIPTION:The purpose of this event is to increase the awareness of poverty and empathy for people living in poverty and to learn practical ways to survive and assist those who live in it. It is free and open to anyone on campus or in the community who wants to participate. The simulation lasts several hours so participants must plan to stay for the whole event. The speaker will be Dr. Caroline Peyton\, Associate Professor of Teaching at the University of Memphis. Dr. Peyton earned her PhD in History from the University of South Carolina. She authored Radioactive Dixie: A Nuclear History of the American South\, published by the University of Georgia Press in 2025. Dr. Peyton’s book will serve as the basis for her lecture on April 16th.
