Center for Interdisciplinary Geospatial Information Technologies Guest Speaker

October 15, 2009 @ 12:00 am

In the spirit of October and Halloween, the Center is pleased to host Dr. Malcolm Comeaux, Professor Emeritus, Arizona State University for a talk about cemeteries at 6pm on 15 October at the Center for Interdisciplinary Geospatial Information Technologies.

The cemeteries of S. Louisiana are different when compared to other cemeteries in America.  The Acadians of Canada bury the dead, as did the first Acadians in Louisiana.  With time, however, the Cajuns changed their burial practices to reflect those of New Orleans.  Family tombs are now common, and almost all burials are in crypts.  This talk will first discuss the history of burials in America, the typical American cemetery, the rules and regulations concerning burials, and other general aspects of burials in America.  Dr. Comeaux will then give a detailed presentation of the typical Cajun cemetery.
