Ray <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Okay, this is Emily Weaver and I\u2019m here with Dr. Cameron McMillen and LePoint Smith and Mrs. Donna McCaleb to conduct an oral history interview on the Historic Neighborhood in downtown Cleveland.\u00a0 And we will be riding around in the DSU van looking at homes along the historic streets.<\/p>\n<p>LS:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It was on this lot.<\/p>\n<p>EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 There was a house right here.<\/p>\n<p>LS:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 There was one.<\/p>\n<p>DM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It was a little house.<\/p>\n<p>LS:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A little house.\u00a0 But I don\u2019t remember anyone that \u2026.<\/p>\n<p>CM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 We are next door to the Jack\u2019s house.<\/p>\n<p>LS:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Yeah, that was originally the Townsend House.<\/p>\n<p>DM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Dr. Townsend.<\/p>\n<p>EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What about across the street?<\/p>\n<p>LS:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 This was always a house.\u00a0 A friend of mine lived there who \u2026<\/p>\n<p>DM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Narcissa\u2026<\/p>\n<p>LS:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Yeah, Narcissa.<\/p>\n<p>DM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 She had a dress shop there.<\/p>\n<p>LS:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Yeah.\u00a0 Mattingly.\u00a0 That was in the \u201850\u2019s, \u201840\u2019s or \u201850\u2019s.\u00a0 That\u2019s not very long ago.<\/p>\n<p>DM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I don\u2019t remember any house on the corner.\u00a0 Do you LePoint?<\/p>\n<p>LS:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Uh huh.<\/p>\n<p>DM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Over there where the lawyer\u2019s are.<\/p>\n<p>LS:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 All these lawyers are newcomers.\u00a0 This was all houses.\u00a0 I\u2019ve forgotten who lived there.<\/p>\n<p>EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Now who lived here?<\/p>\n<p>DM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Dr. Townsend.<\/p>\n<p>LS:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Dr. Townsend.\u00a0 He was a dentist and he built this house.<\/p>\n<p>CM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Emily has just pointed to the Jacks\u2019 house.\u00a0 I\u2019m doing that so we will know where we are.<\/p>\n<p>LS:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Denton\u2019s lived there for a while after the Townsend\u2019s.\u00a0 And (inaudible).<\/p>\n<p>DM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Young people call it the Denton House.<\/p>\n<p>CM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Do you have memories of parties there or anything?\u00a0 Visiting there?<\/p>\n<p>DM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Not in my day.<\/p>\n<p>LS:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 They had a party for the Arts thing.<\/p>\n<p>DM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 That was recently.<\/p>\n<p>EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 That was very nice.<\/p>\n<p>LS:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Cause Gerald Jacks had his office here.\u00a0 And then he decided he was going to move to town and he sold this to his son.\u00a0 So that\u2019s Will\u2019s now.\u00a0 Will Jacks.<\/p>\n<p>EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It still has Law Office on the plaque on the outside of the building.\u00a0 Alright, well we\u2019ll cross Shelby and keep going south.<\/p>\n<p>LS:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 This was the Clark House. Mrs. E.T. Clark and her daughter Helen House lived here.\u00a0 And their son LaValle who is my age, he is still living but he is not well.\u00a0 He doesn\u2019t live here.<\/p>\n<p>DM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Mimi Dossett lives here now.\u00a0 And the Dossett\u2019s bought it from LaValle didn\u2019t they?<\/p>\n<p>LS:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Um hmm.<\/p>\n<p>EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Do you remember much going on in that house?\u00a0 Any activities.<\/p>\n<p>LS:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Yeah, I\u2019m sure.\u00a0 No, Miss Helen didn\u2019t have any activities.\u00a0 I think one time, LaValle and I had birthday\u2019s close and one time when we were very small we had a birthday party.<\/p>\n<p>EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Well just looking at the street, were the trees like this or was it more open.<\/p>\n<p>DM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t this many trees.<\/p>\n<p>CM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Do you remember this house across the street?<\/p>\n<p>DM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I don\u2019t remember.<\/p>\n<p>LS:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What was the man that made clothes?<\/p>\n<p>DM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 He was a tailor.\u00a0 What was his name?<\/p>\n<p>LS:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I can\u2019t think of it.<\/p>\n<p>CM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Was it a wood house then?<\/p>\n<p>LS:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Yeah.<\/p>\n<p>DM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 And I don\u2019t remember any other old Clark\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>LS:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 This is from Judge Clark \u2013 Governor Clark and General Clark \u2013 their descendents.<\/p>\n<p>EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Related to Charlie Jacobs?<\/p>\n<p>LS:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Yeah they are related to Charlie.<\/p>\n<p>DM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I\u2019m not sure of anything over there.<\/p>\n<p>LS:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 There were not too many houses over there that I remember.\u00a0 There were a couple of little smaller wooden ones.\u00a0 I think they have been torn down.<\/p>\n<p>EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Replaced with these?<\/p>\n<p>LS:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Yeah.<\/p>\n<p>EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Now this one is interesting to us.<\/p>\n<p>DM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It\u2019s been added to a lot.\u00a0 This was built by Mrs. Owens in the \u201830\u2019s.\u00a0 And I remember they ate lunch with us everyday while they were building this house.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know where they lived until they moved there.\u00a0 Her husband was Mr. Owen who had the \u2013 where the Coopwood thing is now.\u00a0 On the corner?\u00a0 That was the Owen Building.\u00a0 They call it the Smith Building which is entirely wrong.<\/p>\n<p>CM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 This is 204 Pearman.<\/p>\n<p>LS:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Well it was built by Mrs. Owen.\u00a0 Mrs. Thomas Owen.<\/p>\n<p>EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It kind of stands out among the other houses around here.<\/p>\n<p>DM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It\u2019s been enlarged.<\/p>\n<p>CM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 When was it built.<\/p>\n<p>LS:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The \u201830\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 So what was the original structure?\u00a0 You said it\u2019s been added on to.<\/p>\n<p>LS:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It didn\u2019t have that side there.\u00a0 I think it had a screen door.<\/p>\n<p>EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Wow, I can\u2019t imagine.<\/p>\n<p>CM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Was it considered modern?<\/p>\n<p>DM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Yeah.<\/p>\n<p>EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Kinda different.<\/p>\n<p>DM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 You know who lives there now?<\/p>\n<p>EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Who lives there now?<\/p>\n<p>LS:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Routeman.<\/p>\n<p>DM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Routeman yes.<\/p>\n<p>EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Oh okay, sure.\u00a0 And then the boy.<\/p>\n<p>LS:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 This was the C.R. Smith house.<\/p>\n<p>EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Looks like they are doing a little work on it.<\/p>\n<p>LS:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 And Dr. Adams lives in there.\u00a0 But it went through several different hands after.\u00a0 They left it to a niece and she was supposed to live there and she lived there a little while and then moved away from Cleveland.<\/p>\n<p>EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Growing up, did y\u2019all come down here very much?<\/p>\n<p>DM:\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 I didn\u2019t. These are Jinko Trees.\u00a0 They are the only ones I know of in Cleveland.<\/p>\n<p>LS:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 There\u2019s one in the library yard.\u00a0 But they had this whole block.<\/p>\n<p>DM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The house at the end of the street is the Byrd B-Y-R-D Rooming House.<\/p>\n<p>EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Like we would have been riding right into it right now.<\/p>\n<p>DM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 And it was the front of this house that I came across to a foot bridge and went across the bayou.\u00a0 And that\u2019s how I got to the picture show to the other part of town.\u00a0 Across the footbridge.<\/p>\n<p>LS:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 They don\u2019t have that anymore.<\/p>\n<p>DM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 And I think maybe this house might have been the only house on this street.<\/p>\n<p>LS:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The And then later on he swapped that house \u2013 this house for the little house there by the Baptist Church.\u00a0 And the Dakin\u2019s go from there. But Sarah Ann was born here.\u00a0 She was born about 1933 and so he \u2013 that\u2019s when Uncle Ed had it.\u00a0 It was just a wonderful house.
