Mrs. Lucas, do you willingly participate in this oral history project.<\/p>\n<p>JL:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Yes.<\/p>\n<p>EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Thank you. Alright Dr. McMillen, would you like to begin?<\/p>\n<p>CM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 How long have you lived in Cleveland Jenny?<\/p>\n<p>JL:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I don\u2019t live in Cleveland, but I did live in Cleveland growing up for 21-22 years.<\/p>\n<p>CM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Were you born in Cleveland?<\/p>\n<p>JL:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I was born in Cleveland.<\/p>\n<p>CM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 And you lived there through your high school career?<\/p>\n<p>JL:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Yes.<\/p>\n<p>CM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What addresses did you live in Cleveland?<\/p>\n<p>JL:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Growing up, the only one was 207 North Victoria.<\/p>\n<p>CM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Can you tell us a little bit about the neighborhood and the house?\u00a0 Who were your neighbors?<\/p>\n<p>JL:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 North of me was Mrs. \u2013 Miss Elizabeth Smith.\u00a0 She was a single person.\u00a0 She and her father rented that house until he died, then she rented it from the Galloway\u2019s.\u00a0 South of our house, the Papasan\u2019s lived there while I was young.<\/p>\n<p>EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 How do you spell that?<\/p>\n<p>JL:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 P-a-p-a-s-a-n.\u00a0 I think he was a barber and she may have been a \u2013 not an R.N., but some kind of nursing someway.<\/p>\n<p>CM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Did your parents buy that house or did they build the house?<\/p>\n<p>JL:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I think they bought it in 1948 from a Somerville.<\/p>\n<p>CM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Somerville.<\/p>\n<p>EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Lucy?<\/p>\n<p>JL:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I don\u2019t know.\u00a0 In fact, I don\u2019t think she was a Somerville, I think she married a Somerville.<\/p>\n<p>CM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What do you remember particularly about that house?<\/p>\n<p>JL:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It was three bedrooms, one bath, kitchen, dining room, and a breakfast room.\u00a0 My mother had a business that she ran out of the back of the house.\u00a0 It was a Tom\u2019s Distributorship so we had a big building in the back of the house.<\/p>\n<p>EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Oh, had lots of snacks (inaudible).<\/p>\n<p>CM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Is it used as an apartment now?<\/p>\n<p>JL:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I don\u2019t think that it is.<\/p>\n<p>CM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 There is an apartment behind that house.<\/p>\n<p>JL:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Then that\u2019s where we had the business.<\/p>\n<p>CM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Were there other businesses in the neighborhood?<\/p>\n<p>JL:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 No, and I\u2019m sure that the neighborhood was just tolerant with mama having that.\u00a0 because eighteen-wheelers had to come back up into that small driveway in the night.\u00a0 They would come with their merchandise.<\/p>\n<p>CM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 And nobody complained?<\/p>\n<p>JL:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Well, no.\u00a0 They were just fine.\u00a0 They knew mother was running the business, my father had gotten ill, and they knew she had to have a living.\u00a0 So nobody complained.<\/p>\n<p>CM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Did your mother live in that house until she went into the nursing home?<\/p>\n<p>JL:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 No, she moved out when I moved in there, I think about \u201984.\u00a0 And I lived there until 1989.\u00a0 Then mama sold it.<\/p>\n<p>CM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What differences did you see in the neighborhood between the time you were growing up and living there and the time you came back and lived there?<\/p>\n<p>JL:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 When I was growing up, just about everybody that I knew of owned their house on North Victoria.\u00a0 And when I moved back it seemed like a lot of rental houses by then.\u00a0 I just thought of the street having not the same kind of care in their houses.<\/p>\n<p>EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Where did you stay after growing up and then coming back?\u00a0 Where?<\/p>\n<p>JL:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I moved to Canton.<\/p>\n<p>EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Oh, okay.<\/p>\n<p>JL:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I lived in Canton for many years.<\/p>\n<p>CM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Were there any annual neighborhood activities or memorable moments that you remember about North Victoria?\u00a0 In the neighborhood?<\/p>\n<p>JL:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 As far as the neighborhood, we didn\u2019t celebrate as a neighborhood.\u00a0 But at night, I remember growing up at night.\u00a0 All the parents would come out and sit and talk and the kids would play.<\/p>\n<p>CM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Did most people have air conditioning in their homes?<\/p>\n<p>JL:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Not until I was about eleven.\u00a0 And we didn\u2019t have TV, so, as far as I know, there was only one TV on the block.\u00a0 The parents would go and watch Lawrence Welk and the kids would play.\u00a0 That was like every week.<\/p>\n<p>CM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Electricity comes from highway eight and everybody else gets their electricity from the same \u2013 I think it\u2019s a transformer in the middle of the block.\u00a0 Did you know that growing up or did you (inaudible)?<\/p>\n<p>JL:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 No, I never knew that.<\/p>\n<p>CM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 When the electricity goes off, everybody\u2019s goes off but hers.<\/p>\n<p>JL:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I remember Victoria flooding a lot when I was young.<\/p>\n<p>EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Bad floods.<\/p>\n<p>JL:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Bad floods.<\/p>\n<p>CM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Did it get in the houses?<br \/>\nJL:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I don\u2019t ever remember it getting into our house, but it got into the warehouse and ruined a lot of our\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n<p>CM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Tom\u2019s warehouse behind your house?<br \/>\nJL:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 merchandise, because people were out in boats.\u00a0 I remember that.<\/p>\n<p>CM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Were there a lot of children on the street when you were growing up?<\/p>\n<p>JL:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Lots of children.\u00a0 And we all just played freely.<\/p>\n<p>CM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Were there restrictions on where you could go, or how far you could go, or what time you had to be home and that sort of thing?<\/p>\n<p>JL:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I\u2019m sure I had to be home by dark.\u00a0 I\u2019m sure I couldn\u2019t go off that block without asking.\u00a0 But up and down the block I could.\u00a0 You had to be in calling distance, had to hear.\u00a0 Had to be able to hear.<\/p>\n<p>EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 If you were summoned home.<\/p>\n<p>JL:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Um hmm.<\/p>\n<p>CM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What were the kinds of things you did for fun?\u00a0 Summer activities and school days and such?<\/p>\n<p>JL:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I was thinking about that.\u00a0 I remember Mrs. Beevers formed a every game there was a dance.\u00a0 Up until I think \u201968.\u00a0 I graduated in \u201969.\u00a0 As soon as we integrated, they stopped almost immediately.\u00a0 We had a junior \u2013 we still were part \u2013 when they had junior-senior games when you would carry in the flower rope.<\/p>\n<p>EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I didn\u2019t know about that.<\/p>\n<p>JL:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 You didn\u2019t know about the flower\u2026 That was a nice tradition.\u00a0 I think the seniors would carry it in and the seniors would carry it out.\u00a0 Taking over then.\u00a0 But you made it out of magnolias and some of those flowers that bloom in May on a bush.\u00a0 Hydrangea\u2019s.\u00a0 They were beautiful.<\/p>\n<p>EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I love hydrangea\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>JL:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 We would make it.\u00a0 But I\u2019m wondering if we weren\u2019t about the last class that did that. And the girls wore a certain color like pastel\u2019s, or if you were a senior you wore white.\u00a0 And then when my sister was growing up they had that and they would wear formal dresses.\u00a0 Because there were pictures of her carrying the rope with a formal dress on.\u00a0 And it was so pretty.<\/p>\n<p>CM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Would there have been some kind of (inaudible) to carry it into or out of?<\/p>\n<p>JL:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 We did it on the football field.\u00a0 It was class night.\u00a0 And I know there would have been singing and just kind of turning over the torch, you know to the juniors.<\/p>\n<p>EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 That was special.<\/p>\n<p>JL:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 That was a nice tradition.<\/p>\n<p>EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Um hmm.\u00a0 What do you enjoy \u2013 do you like how you\u2019ve seen Cleveland grow?\u00a0 I mean coming back to the town after a while after being gone from here, are you proud of where it has come?<\/p>\n<p>JL:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I think Cleveland is a wonderful town.\u00a0 I do. I think it is really pretty.\u00a0 It\u2019s the nicest town in the delta.\u00a0 The cleanest town around.<\/p>\n<p>EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 You see the street sweeper all the time.<\/p>\n<p>JL:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It is really a nice delta town.<\/p>\n<p>EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 We (inaudible) try.<\/p>\n<p>JL:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Delta State adds to it.<\/p>\n<p>CM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What do you think makes it special?<\/p>\n<p>JL:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I guess the town has had good leadership.\u00a0 That\u2019s what I credit it to.\u00a0 They\u2019ve kept it up, kept \u2013 probably the Chamber has done their part (inaudible).\u00a0 Businesses here and it hasn\u2019t died.\u00a0 I was looking at some statistics a while ago.\u00a0 I think Cleveland has decreased in population, but it seems like our downtown has stayed pretty vibrant.\u00a0 And we have a shopping area.\u00a0 I think people come here and shop.\u00a0 Definitely do.\u00a0 You know when I was growing up I don\u2019t think we had but two places that I would call nice.\u00a0 Out there on the highway where KC\u2019s there was a Michael\u2019s. Can you imagine having all that help?<\/p>\n<p>EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Just to raise one baby.<\/p>\n<p>JL:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 But she did.\u00a0 And they were not in a wealthy family and that was just how you did it.\u00a0 My grandmother didn\u2019t think all of that was necessary but my mother did.<\/p>\n<p>EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 So how many are there of you?<\/p>\n<p>JL:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Four.
