EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 This is Emily Weaver and I am with Dr. Cameron McMillen and we are interviewing Charlie Capps on the 10th of July 2007 in the Capps Archives and Museum for the Historic Neighborhood Oral History Project.<\/p>\n

EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Mr. Capps, do you willingly participate in this oral history project?<\/p>\n

CC:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Yes.<\/p>\n

EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Okay, thank you.\u00a0 Alright well we will start with some pretty simple questions.\u00a0 Can you give me your full name?<\/p>\n

CC:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Charles Wilson Capps Jr.<\/p>\n

EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Alright, and what is your current occupation?<\/p>\n

CC:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Retired.<\/p>\n

EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Alright and what are you retired from?<\/p>\n

CC:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Well, I had an insurance agency, I farmed, and I was in the legislature many years \u2013 33 years.<\/p>\n

EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Okay, okay.\u00a0 And what is your current residence?<\/p>\n

CC:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 1012 Farmer Street here in Cleveland.\u00a0 1012.<\/p>\n

EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Okay, alright, let\u2019s begin with the first question.\u00a0 How long have you lived in Cleveland?<\/p>\n

CC:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Well, my family moved to Cleveland from Merigold when I was five.\u00a0 So I have lived here since 1930.<\/p>\n

EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Alright, since moving when you were five, have you always lived in Cleveland?<\/p>\n

CC:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Yes.<\/p>\n

EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Alright, where did y’all move to here in town?<\/p>\n

CC:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 We lived \u2013 my granddaddy had died and he had one of those big old frame houses on Bolivar Street with a porch around it.\u00a0 So we moved there on North Bolivar.<\/p>\n

EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 North Bolivar.\u00a0 What is the address now?<\/p>\n

CC:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I don\u2019t remember.<\/p>\n

EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Oh okay.\u00a0 It\u2019s just on North Bolivar.<\/p>\n

CM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Do you know who lives there now?<\/p>\n

CC:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 No, the house has been demolished a good many years ago.\u00a0 Ed Coleman used to live there.\u00a0 He built another house on the site.\u00a0 I\u2019m not sure who lives there.<\/p>\n

EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Okay.\u00a0 So there is a house on the site now?<\/p>\n

CC:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Yes.<\/p>\n

EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Alright, when you moved to North Bolivar, your grandfather\u2019s home, after that where have you lived around Cleveland?<\/p>\n

CC:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Well I lived there and then my mother and daddy built \u2013 they owned a lot in back of that house, so they built a house about 1937 or 38 on Leflore Street.\u00a0 And I lived there growing up.<\/p>\n

EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What was the address there, do you happen to remember?<\/p>\n

CC:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I\u2019m guessing 212 or something like that.<\/p>\n

CM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Is that house still standing?<\/p>\n

CC:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Yes, June Tatum lives there.<\/p>\n

EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Okay, alright.\u00a0 They built the house, do you mean they designed it or did your parents actually get out there and build it?<\/p>\n

CC:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Oh no, no, no.\u00a0 My mother and daddy designed it and somebody built it.<\/p>\n

EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A local contractor probably?<\/p>\n

CC:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Yeah, I\u2019m sure.<\/p>\n

EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Okay, can you describe growing up in that house?\u00a0 Kind of what the house was like, the rooms?<\/p>\n

CC:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Well let\u2019s see, there was a formal living room and formal dining room and two bedrooms and a bath downstairs and a kitchen.\u00a0 A screened porch on the back.\u00a0 And sometime during the process a third bedroom was added upstairs and a pool table.<\/p>\n

EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Ohhh, I\u2019ll bet that kept you busy.<\/p>\n

CC:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Yes, I enjoyed that, I sure did.<\/p>\n

EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Okay, the formal living and dining room.\u00a0 I\u2019m interested, were you allowed in there in those places?<\/p>\n

CC:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Well, my mother was always training a cook to serve properly.\u00a0 And we would have formal dinners and we just ate in there when we had company. We had a breakfast room where we ate our regular.<\/p>\n

EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Okay, so were there many other houses around you at that time?<\/p>\n

CC:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Oh yeah.\u00a0 Yes, there were houses on both sides, all around us.<\/p>\n

EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Okay, who were some of your neighbors?<\/p>\n

CC:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Well, Dr. Louis Butler, the dentist, and he had a son my age.<\/p>\n

EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Okay.<\/p>\n

CC:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 We were great friends.<\/p>\n

EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Did you play a lot together?<\/p>\n

CC:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 But back on Bolivar Street we – the Williford boys lived right across the street from us, and the Nunnery boys lived right next door to us, and the William\u2019s girl lived two or three houses back down, and one or two other boys lived around there and we just had a good time.<\/p>\n

EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Oh yeah.\u00a0 What would be some of the things that ya\u2019ll would do?<\/p>\n

CC:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Well we played football and played Andy Over.<\/p>\n

EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Played what?<\/p>\n

CC:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 You threw\u00a0 a ball over a house or a building some kind of way and we played that and we\u2019d be out after dark.<\/p>\n

EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Yeah, yeah.\u00a0 Okay, were there any annual neighborhood activities or parades or anything?<\/p>\n

CC:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Yeah, I don\u2019t remember any neighborhood activities.\u00a0 Of course there wasn\u2019t any air conditioning and I played an instrument, a clarinet.\u00a0 My mother required that I play a clarinet.\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t talented at all.\u00a0 And Louis Butler, my next door neighbor, practiced all the time.\u00a0 He was really talented.\u00a0 And Clarence Lawler right across the street \u2013 Bennie Beach right across the street, he was really talented and he played all the time.\u00a0 And that drove my mother crazy that I wasn\u2019t practicing.<\/p>\n

EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What were you doing instead of practicing?<\/p>\n

CC:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I was just fooling around.<\/p>\n

EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Fooling around.<\/p>\n

CC:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Well, I played football in high school and tennis, track.\u00a0 A lot of times I was busy doing those things.<\/p>\n

EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Oh absolutely, being much more active.\u00a0 Any other specific things you can remember about growing up in that house on Leflore?\u00a0 Were there special occasions in the home?<\/p>\n

CC:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Oh, we had parties all the time.\u00a0 My mother was a very dominant person, she would have parties for me.\u00a0 We would have other children around town over to the parties.<\/p>\n

EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Oh okay.\u00a0 Special occasions?<\/p>\n

CC:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 (inaudible).\u00a0 We had a nice backyard and in the summertime we had a party back there.\u00a0 I don\u2019t remember any neighborhood parties though.<\/p>\n

CM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Did you have brothers or sisters?<\/p>\n

CC:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Did I have \u2013 no, I was an only child.<\/p>\n

EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 You had complete dominion of the house?<\/p>\n

CC:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Well I didn\u2019t call it that.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t call it that.<\/p>\n

EW:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 You mentioned the pool table.\u00a0 When did the pool table get there in the house?<\/p>\n

CC:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Now that\u2019s really something interesting.\u00a0 I was 18 years old and in the Army down at Fort Hood, Texas and I had a fender bender.\u00a0 And they asked me for my drivers\u2019 license.\u00a0 I told him that Mississippi didn\u2019t have any drivers\u2019 licenses.\u00a0 At that time when I had left and joined the Army there wasn\u2019t any drivers\u2019 license.\u00a0 But sometimes shortly thereafter the legislature must have passed a law where you had to have a drivers\u2019 license.\u00a0 So I called my daddy and he went up to the Sheriff\u2019s Office and got me a license and sent it to me.<\/p>\n

Green lived in Cleveland in 1920 from Boyle.\u00a0 He graduated from Millsaps and joined the firm of John T. Smith and he was the County Attorney for the A.B. Turner tragedy.<\/p>\n

CM:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Is that the jail that is connected to the courthouse now and not used now?<\/p>\n

CC:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 No, there was a jail right there on the courthouse grounds, but it was old and finally it was torn down and that jail that is connected to the courthouse was, I don\u2019t remember when it was built, but I was Sheriff four years and there is a hangman\u2019s noose now, in operation and everything.\u00a0 But at that time I believe they moved all the executions to Parchman.<\/p>\n
