\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The land that we are standing on, is this where your family always had their half acre?<\/p>\n<p>CT:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 No.\u00a0 This is some land that I bought.<\/p>\n<p>EG:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I\u2019ve been farming ever since about \u201986.<\/p>\n<p>EG:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What did you start out growing?<\/p>\n<p>CT:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Basic stuff that we use in this area.\u00a0 Beans, a lot of beans, okra,\u00a0 (inaudible).<\/p>\n<p>EG:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 So you have always been a vegetable farmer.<\/p>\n<p>CT:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Yes.<\/p>\n<p>EG:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Do you know any of the history of this land that you own?\u00a0 What was here before?<\/p>\n<p>CT:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Soybeans.\u00a0 This land was once owned by Mr. Seaberry.\u00a0 He is deceased.\u00a0 He worked this land before I got it.\u00a0 I bought it from a lawyer in Clarksdale.\u00a0 I think he bought it for taxes or something like that.<\/p>\n<p>EG:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 So you have grown peas and butterbeans and that type, did you say turnips?<\/p>\n<p>CT:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Well, all types of greens.\u00a0 Turnips, mustard, collards.\u00a0 You know different, common greens we use in this area.<\/p>\n<p>EG:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Has the technology that you have used in your growing changed over time?<\/p>\n<p>CT:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Oh yes.\u00a0 We are learning.\u00a0 As a matter of fact, I go to seminars all the time to learn new things about growing vegetables.\u00a0 But its mostly, I guess the thing that keeps us going is the passion for growing.<\/p>\n<p>EG:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What changes have you had to make to make the farm work over time?<\/p>\n<p>CT:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Well, in some of our techniques, we finding out that we need to incorporate things like greenhouses and drip systems and stuff like that.\u00a0 That we normally would not have in this area.\u00a0 We normally would just ut seeds in the ground and just depend on you know Mother Nature and the weather for the outcome.\u00a0 But we are learning that in a lot of things you have got to get into a more controlled environment.\u00a0 So what we are doing now, some of the stuff that we grow we be growing in a greenhouse.\u00a0 And we will be using instead overhead sprinklers we will be using a drip system because some vegetables do better when you put water over the top.<\/p>\n<p>EG:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 When did your family come to the Delta?<\/p>\n<p>CT:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Well we were all basically born in this area.\u00a0 My family was from a little place called Hushpuckena which is right down the road here.\u00a0 Some of the brothers and sisters left but they stayed here.<\/p>\n<p>EG:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Did they farm there or did they just have the half acre?<\/p>\n<p>CT: \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Well we have always had gardens.\u00a0 Even when we were sharecropping they would always allow you enough space to grow a garden, so we have always grown vegetables and raised livestock, cows, hogs and chickens and stuff like that from the beginning.\u00a0 My dad was a (inaudible) from the Depression that happened.\u00a0 I think from that point he decided that he, you know, if he would use the land and even if there was a depression and you are cut off from the other parts of the world, or if money is not any good, you can still eat if you grow stuff.\u00a0 And so from that we always would grow our own vegetables and stuff.<\/p>\n<p>EG:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Do you know if there were ever any buildings on this land or if it ever had a farmhouse?<\/p>\n<p>CT:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I don\u2019t think so.\u00a0 I think it has just basically been a field here because their home place was right across the bayou here.<\/p>\n<p>EG:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 How important, what is the value of the land to you?<\/p>\n<p>CT:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What is the value?<\/p>\n<p>EG:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Not like the monetary value, but what does the land mean to you?<\/p>\n<p>CT:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Well it really helps us to feel a little more secure in knowing that we can grow vegetables and stuff and not have to depend on vegetables being trucked in.\u00a0 And then another thing, most of the vegetables and stuff, farmers have to use genetic stuff to boost the yield on vegetables.\u00a0 It is not really the same as using (inaudible) or organic seeds.\u00a0 And so we really want to get back to, you know, organic, or as close as we can to that.\u00a0 And we want to get away from chemical free vegetables.\u00a0 We want to really get back to chemical free vegetables.<\/p>\n<p>EG:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 So you try to be chemical free and organic as you can?<\/p>\n<p>CT:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Well we are transitioning now.\u00a0 You know I am using some chemicals.\u00a0 But within about three years hopefully we will be totally free, cause it\u2019s a system.\u00a0 You know that is a system just like the chemical grown stuff, it is a system.\u00a0 So we are trying to change and get into the system of chemical free vegetables.<\/p>\n<p>EG:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 How many children do you have?<\/p>\n<p>CT:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I\u2019ve got four.<\/p>\n<p>EG:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 No, I don\u2019t think so.<\/p>\n<p>EG:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 food that we eat has to travel about fifteen hundred miles.\u00a0 A lot of it for us to even get our meals.\u00a0 And if we had a problem with, you know, transporting or were cut off we really would not have any food to eat.<\/p>\n<p>Unless someone was actually growing food in this area.\u00a0 And I think for that reason alone we need to develop this initiative and get some food growing in the Delta.\u00a0 Because we have, you know, some of the richest soil in the world but we don\u2019t really grow that many vegetables in the area.\u00a0 And so for that reason alone I think we need to develop in those areas and we need to find out the affects of\u00a0 the sun and rain and all that and how it is going to affect vegetables and make the necessary adjustments to actually grow vegetables in this area.\u00a0 And with this area being a chemical area too where they spray their conventional crops we need to find ways to actually co-exist with vegetables because a lot of time the drifts and stuff affect our vegetables.<\/p>\n<p>EG:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Can you tell me about the NRCS project you are equipment for farmers and they make it possible for the small farmers with less than a hundred acres to be able to have irrigation.\u00a0 That includes drip systems, sprinkler systems, wells, floods, and just whatever.\u00a0 And without that, a lot of what\u2019s happening now would not have happened that fast, possibly would not have happened at all.\u00a0 But through this project with NRCS most
