My dear Father<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I have at last seen one of the humors of war.\u00a0 Not the humor on\u00a0 the battle field but that of destruction, Columbus is now in ashes!\u00a0 Was evacuated on the 1st of this month.\u00a0 Every man bundled up his things in a hurry and set the torch to his cabin.\u00a0 It was a tremendous light and a terrific sight.\u00a0 The move could not have cost the confederacy less than 5 millions.\u00a0 It dishearten me more than anything that has occurred heretofore.\u00a0 A great many of the boys lost all of their baggage but our men got through safe.\u00a0 We had to march Saturday, Sat. night, Sunday and Sun. night and a part of Monday and if was not worn out I can\u2019t tell, nevertheless I danced to the music better than many of them that had marched several times before.\u00a0 When I got pretty tired I communed in a double quick and got some distance in advance of my company.\u00a0 Stole an old Sharp Back Mule and made a piece but his back was so sharp I could not ride over two miles.\u00a0 About this time I come up with a wagon master and told him I would give him my mule for a seat in the wagon to Union City.\u00a0 He agreed and I crawled in the wagon and rode 8 miles.\u00a0 Oh you can\u2019t imagine how much good it did do me.\u00a0 We took the car at Union City for this place and are here now in tents.\u00a0 Very disagreeable camp and with our snug cabins that were in Columbus, Ky.<\/p>\n

I have no idea when we will leave this place or how and where we will go when we do leave.\u00a0 I thought when we left C. we were going to (word?).\u00a0 (Words) and may be yet tho\u2019 doubtful.\u00a0 I\u2019m not able to tell you where to write.\u00a0 Just rest easy about John R.\u00a0 He will keep right.<\/p>\n

I never received the box Ma and Sister N. sent me don\u2019t try anymore.\u00a0 All the boys in excellent health, myself among the numbers.\u00a0 The report is this morning that we thrashed the yanks once more at new Madrid, Mo.\u00a0 I fear it is false tho\u2019 I think it time.\u00a0 Only three months more.\u00a0 Love to all \u2013 I write again when I learn where we are going.<\/p>\n
