Baird Collection<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Transcribed by: Wanda Ray<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Transcription Date: 2.10.2006<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Crawford<\/p>\n<p>April 3, 1860<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Dear John:<\/p>\n<p>Next to seeing our absent friends is receiving letters from them.\u00a0 Your letter this morning cheered me considerably.\u00a0 I think I will not allow myself any more uneasiness about my absent ones.\u00a0 But try to leave them I faith in the hands of God believing that he will do all things well.\u00a0 I received a letter from your Pa at Vicksburg.\u00a0 He said after visiting Mary he should hasten home.\u00a0 I am daily expecting him and will write you as soon as he returns.\u00a0 Also our from Mary of the same date \u2013 She writes in much better spirits \u2013 this winter than she ever has since she lived in the swamp.\u00a0 We have an excellent overseer at our plantation.\u00a0 The boys say he is ahead of all his neighbors in farming.\u00a0 I do hope he will make a good crop.\u00a0 Mr. McLelland is sick this week with Carbuncels on his neck, and the boys are trying to shoot turkeys.\u00a0 There are a great many in the swamp this spring.\u00a0 The male school numbers fifty and the Female about as large.\u00a0 I can scarcely imagine where all the children come from.\u00a0 I believe you correspond with Sid and probably have heard that Lucy won\u2019t stay in Camden with Mr. Horford and Wm.\u00a0 She got back last Friday night.\u00a0 Horford says Miss Lucy would not do anything but cry to go home and he thought it was best to bring her back to her Mama.\u00a0 He returned to Camden this morning and left her not knowing when he would return.\u00a0 Oh!\u00a0 What a world this is!\u00a0 I think people ought not to marry until they are willing to give up everybody else for each other.\u00a0 You say your Pa and yourself are the most wretched that ever lived.\u00a0 Stop and reflect.\u00a0 Whose fault is it?\u00a0 If the fault is at your own door, begin at once to correct it.\u00a0 Cultivate a contented disposition.\u00a0 Do your duty;
