Biographical Information:<\/em><\/p>\n

The Thigpen Papers are the papers of Mr. J.A. Thigpen, Sr. and Mr. J.A. \u201cBud\u201d Thigpen,<\/p>\n

Jr., both of whom served in the Mississippi House of Representatives.\u00a0 J.A. Thigpen, Sr. was born at Lake Como, Mississippi on December 20, 1892 and was an accountant and farmer and was very active in the community.\u00a0 He was elected for four terms to the Mississippi House of Representatives representing Bolivar County, and in 1952 during his last term in the House, he was appointed as Commissioner of Public Welfare and served until his retirement in 1956.\u00a0 He passed away on April 19, 1967.<\/p>\n

One of his children was J.A. (Bud) Thigpen, Jr., a businessman who owned Thigpen Petroleum Company.\u00a0 Mr. Thigpen was married to Betty Thigpen and they made their home in Cleveland. He too was active in the community, and was elected to the Mississippi House of Representatives representing Bolivar County.\u00a0 He was a strong supporter for Delta State and always strived to make sure it received proper funding.\u00a0 Mr. Thigpen retired in 1987 and passed away in 2001. In his memory, the Thigpen Family made a major leading gift towards the construction of the J.A. Thigpen Baseball Complex which is situated on the campus of Delta State University.<\/p>\n

The Thigpen Papers contain a resolution from the Mississippi House of Representatives honoring J.A. Thigpen, Sr., and papers from J.A. Thigpen, Jr. includes a report from the State Central Data Processing Authority, and miscellaneous correspondence.<\/p>\n
