Scope and Content:<\/em><\/p>\n

During the 1920\u2019s and early 1930\u2019s many Chinese families left the Mississippi Delta area due to a lack of educational opportunities.\u00a0 Chinese children were not allowed to attend the white schools which resulted in legal action in 1924 to no avail.\u00a0 In the mid 1930\u2019s Chinese schools were established in the Delta. One of the most successful was the Chinese Mission School in Cleveland that came about due to the efforts of a white missionary from China, Reverend Ira Eavenson.\u00a0 This was so successful that the First Baptist Church, along with local civic clubs, the county, and the Mississippi Baptist Convention worked together to construct a school on the outskirts of Cleveland.\u00a0 The morning curriculum was that of the white schools and local area white teachers were employed as teachers and paid by the county.\u00a0 The afternoons were instructions of Chinese.\u00a0\u00a0 Some children were boarded at the school.\u00a0 After World War II Chinese children were allowed to attend the white schools to some degree, but it was not widespread until the 1950\u2019s and 1960\u2019s and eventually the Chinese school closed.\u00a0 The Chinese Baptist Church collection contains documents, books, and members photographs during the period prior to its closing.<\/p>\n
