Leon Koury \u00b7 Back to collection home <\/a><\/p>\n[\/heading][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ width=”1\/1″][vc_column_text]Leon Koury was born in 1909 in Greenville, Mississippi, the son of Syrian immigrants who \"koury\"<\/a>owned and operated\u00a0a grocery store there. One day, he\u00a0wrote to William Alexander Percy, another local, after Percy had a poem published in\u00a0Scribner\u2019s<\/em>, seeking advice on writing. Alexander invited him over, but he was more impressed with the drawings on the outside of Koury\u2019s notebook than the poems on the inside.\u00a0A friend of Percy\u2019s encouraged Koury to take up sculpture. He became well known for\u00a0 busts, including one of \u00a0William Alexander Percy and William Faulkner.<\/p>\n

In 1939, Koury was named director of the newly opened Delta Art Center in Greenville.\u00a0While the mentor of many Mississippi artists and writers including William Beckwith, Koury died in poverty in 1993.<\/p>\n

This box contains a few various works of Koury\u2019s mentor, William Percy. Also, the Archives houses a cast of Leon Koury\u2019s hand.<\/p>\n
