column_border_width=&#8221;none&#8221; column_border_style=&#8221;solid&#8221;][vc_column_text]The seventh cohort of the Mississippi Teacher Residency (MTR) will begin soon at Delta State University with support from a grant from the Mississippi Department of Education (MDE). MTR is part of a statewide initiative to expand and diversify the teacher pipeline so that all students have teachers who are well-prepared, appropriately licensed and can serve as role models.<\/p>\n<p>The Mississippi Teacher Residency (MTR) Program enables teacher residents to earn a Master of Arts in Teaching to become a certified teacher in the state of Mississippi. Through participating in the grant, residents agree to a two-year teaching commitment with the employing school district. Residents are expected to complete the degree and pass all required licensure exams within the two-year period. Upon completion of the program and the passing of licensure exams, residents will be able to apply for a regular elementary education teacher license with a special education endorsement (meaning the resident will be certified to teach K-6 general education and K-12 special education).<\/p>\n<p>The Master of Arts in Teaching program is a 14-month degree program that prepares residents for certification in the field of elementary education. Residents receive a full academic year of residency experience.
