column_border_width=&#8221;none&#8221; column_border_style=&#8221;solid&#8221;][vc_column_text]<strong class=\"red\">Active:<\/strong> an undergraduate\u00a0man or woman who\u00a0is a full-time student and participating in\u00a0his\/her fraternity or sorority.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"red\">Advisor: <\/strong>an\u00a0alumnus or alumna member who serves as a resource for the active chapter and liaison between the alums and collegians.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"red\">Advisory Board: <\/strong>members of an alumni chapter who advise the collegian chapter.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"red\">Affiliate:<\/strong>\u00a0means &#8220;to join with an organization.&#8221; Colonies petition national organizations to affiliate with them. A member who switches schools may also affiliate with the chapter at his\/her new school.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"red\"><strong>Alumni (men)\/Alumnae (women): <\/strong><\/strong>more than one alumnus\/alumna.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"red\">Alumnus (man)\/Alumna (woman):<\/strong> an initiated member that has graduated from college or who belongs to a graduate chapter.<\/p>\n<p><b>Badge:<\/b>\u00a0also known as a &#8216;pin&#8217; to some organizations. It is an item of jewelry given to members upon initiation. The badge is to be worn at all official Chapter functions, and upon a members death it should be returned to the sorority or fraternity headquarters. The badge must be worn with business like attire, usually over the heart and above all other pins.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"red\">Bid:<\/strong> an invitation to membership in IFC \/ NPC \/ NPHC organizations. They are given out during formal recruitment (on Bid Day for Panhellenic and Bid Night for IFC). The NPHC process does not include bids.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"red\">Bid Day\/Night:<\/strong>\u00a0the last day of recruitment in which potential new members\/new members receive formal invitations to join a sorority\/fraternity.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"red\">Big:\u00a0<\/strong>nickname for a big sister or brother, a mentor assigned to all new members. Many organizations have special names for these pairings.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"red\">Brother\/Sister:<\/strong> a term used by an active or new\u00a0member when referring to another active\u00a0or new member.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"red\">Call:<\/strong> a yell used mostly by NPHC organizations used to identify and greet frats and sorors. For example, Alpha Kappa Alpha&#8217;s call is SKEE-WEE. non-members are not permitted to use the call.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"red\">Candlelight:<\/strong> a sorority ceremony in which a sister announces her receiving a lavaliere, pin, or engagement ring from her boyfriend. Also known as a &#8216;Candle Pass.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"red\">Chapter:<\/strong> the local collegiate or graduate group of a national fraternity or sorority.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"red\">Chapter<\/strong> <strong>Meeting:\u00a0<\/strong>typically a weekly meeting held to discuss \u00a0sorority or fraternity business.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"red\">Charter:<\/strong> the official document recognizing a chapter\u2019s status by the national organization.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"red\">Colony:<\/strong> status of a new chapter before installation.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"red\">Colors:<\/strong>\u00a0the official pair or triad of colors that represent a specific Greek organization.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"red\">Continuous Open Bid (COB)\/Open Bid:\u00a0<\/strong>if a Panhellenic sorority does not reach the allowable membership total during formal recruitment or if they do not reach quota, they may hold an informal recruitment, and offer bid to potential new members. IFC groups offer Open Bids to potential members during informal recruitment.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"red\">Crest:<\/strong>\u00a0insignia used by Greek organizations. Each crest has hidden, secret meaning and may also be known as a coat of arms or shield.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"red\">Dues:<\/strong> the charge of joining a Greek organizations. Typically covers the costs of Chapter operations, formal events, activities, and other member activities.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"red\">Expansion:<\/strong>\u00a0when a Chapter&#8217;s National Headquarters is looking to expand and open a chapter at new school.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"red\">Formal Recruitment:<\/strong>\u00a0see\u00a0<em>Recruitment.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"red\">Frat:<\/strong> NPHC term used to refer to one\u2019s fraternity or a fraternity brother.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"red\">Greek:<\/strong> a term applied to members affiliated with Greek-letter social\u00a0organizations.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"red\">Greek Week:<\/strong>\u00a0an organized week of activities specifically held to unite all Councils and their Chapters.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"red\">Handshake:<\/strong>\u00a0a special handshake unique to each organization that only initiated members will know. May be known as a &#8216;Grip.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"red\">Informal Recruitment:<\/strong>\u00a0see\u00a0<em>Recruitment.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"red\">Initiation: <\/strong>a formal ceremony in which a new member becomes an initiated member.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"red\">Intake: <\/strong>the period of training before initiation when NPHC new members learn the history and traditions of the organization and bonds with his\/her chapter.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"red\">Interfraternity Council (IFC):<\/strong> the governing body of\u00a0Kappa Alpha, Kappa Sigma,\u00a0Phi Mu Alpha,\u00a0Pi Kappa Alpha, and Sigma Alpha Epsilon.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"red\">Interest Meeting:<\/strong> meeting for prospective members to receive information about and meet members of\u00a0a Greek\u00a0organization.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"red\">Lavaliere:<\/strong>\u00a0a necklace with sorority letters, often worn by members. Lavaliering is a process where a fraternity member would give his lavaliere to his girlfriend, as a sign of a serious relationship, which was made known to the girlfriend&#8217;s sorority via &#8216;Candlelight.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"red\">Legacy:<\/strong> a prospective member whose parent, grandparent or sibling is an alumna\/alumnus or an initiated member of\u00a0a Greek\u00a0organization.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"red\">Letters:\u00a0<\/strong>the first Greek letter of each Greek word that makes up the name of the fraternity or sorority are often displayed on apparel. For example, Delta Sigma Theta&#8217;s letters are DST. Note that some organization&#8217;s do not allow new member to wear letters (only the organization&#8217;s name spelled out), while others do.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"red\">Line:<\/strong> a group of new members in a specific NPHC chapter in a specific semester.<\/p>\n<p><strong><strong class=\"red\">Little:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>nickname for a Big&#8217;s new member who\u00a0they mentor.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"red\">Mixer\/Exchange\/Social:<\/strong>\u00a0a party between a sorority and fraternity, or several fraternities and sororities, often involving themes or games.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"red\">National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC):<\/strong> the governing body of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Zeta Phi Beta, Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi\u00a0and Phi Beta Sigma.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"red\">National Panhellenic Council (NPC): <\/strong>the governing body of Delta Delta Delta, Kappa Delta,\u00a0and Phi Mu.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"red\">Neophyte:<\/strong>\u00a0new member of an NPHC organization. Also called a Neo.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"red\">New Member:<\/strong> a\u00a0new member in a specific\u00a0chapter\u00a0who has not been initiated.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"red\">On the Yard:<\/strong>\u00a0an NPHC phrase meaning that a chapter is currently chartered on campus.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"red\">Order of Omega:<\/strong> a national honor society that recognizes and promotes Greek leadership and scholarship.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"red\">Philanthropy:<\/strong>\u00a0a charity or fundraiser that an organization supports. Can be national or local or both.
