History is not just for people who plan to teach, and it is far too valuable to leave exclusively to historians. In classrooms and in textbooks, it too often seems lifeless and boring - - "just one d - - - - - d thing after another," as Henry Ford once put it. When handled well, however, history links the intellectual rigor of scientific inquiry with the aesthetic pleasure of art and the excitement of drama. Arguably the greatest work of modern fiction, War and Peace, is an extended encounter with the urgency of history, as Leo Tolstoy explores the question of why events happen as they do and not otherwise.
At Delta State University we strive to make the study of history exciting as well as valuable. All students, regardless of major, must complete at least six hours of history from either a two-semester survey of Western Civilization (His 101 - 102) or a similar survey of U. S. History (201 - 202). Moreover, the Department of History offers a major leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree.
