Art Center Gallery
WELCOME
TO THE WRIGHT ART CENTER GALLERY
In
1969, the former Roberts Library was renovated and became the Fielding L. Wright
Art Center with the spacious gallery created out of the old reading room of
the library. The Art Center and Gallery was dedicated to the former Mississippi
Governor Wright, known in the 1940's as a "Friend of Education."
MISSION
Wright
Art Center Gallery organizes and presents contemporary art by regional, national,
and international artists. Exhibitions in the gallery reflects artistic developments
in traditional media–drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, craft
media, photography, applied arts–and seeks to present newer genres such
as digital imagery and multimedia. Educational programs, particularly lectures
and gallery talks, provide viewers the opportunity to expand their awareness,
promote understanding, and develop an appreciation for the visual arts.
Wright
Art Center Gallery exists for the education and enrichment of cultural life
at Delta State and philosophical viewpoints expressed through a variety of artistic
formats.
A
SPECIAL INVITATION TO UNIVERSITY STUDENTS
Each
exhibition at Wright Art Center Gallery is planned and presented for you. You
are encouraged to think of the gallery as a living lab for encountering the
works of artists not normally available to you. Please use it as a visual resource
where you will see a range of artistic expressions in diverse styles, media,
and themes throughout the academic year. Studio art majors will find art which
can serve as a catalyst for their own exploration of issues and content, materials
and working methods. Students enrolled in art history and art appreciation courses
acquire direct contact with art objects and gives them a forum for critical
thinking and writing exercises in relation to the art. For non-art majors, exhibitions
in the gallery may provide an exciting initial encounter with the visual arts.
The goal of each exhibition is to feature work that broadens your perception
of art and expands the dialogue you seek in your academic studies.

The
gallery is open during the academic sessions on
Monday through Thursday 8:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
