Books

  • Teacher Resources: Over 2,000 teacher activity books devoted to classroom management, lesson plans, bulletin board ideas, games and activities, literature units, etc. Titles are grouped by general subject areas, i.e. Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Language Arts, Thematic Units, Art, Music, Finger Play, Computers, Study Skills, Assessment. These very popular resources provide teachers with many creative and timesaving ideas to design lesson units. The Teacher Resources may be located through the on-line catalog and are for library use only.
  • Reference Sources: The IRC maintains a small collection of reference titles relevant to teachers, school librarians, and students of children's literature. Encyclopedias range from Britannica, Americana, World Book, Compton's, and Child Craft. Bibliographies of recommended titles for children may be found in Children's Catalog, Elementary School Library Collection, or Best Books for Children. Special sources include Encyclopedia of Education, Children's Book Review Index, Major Authors and Illustrators for Children and Young Adults, Junior Plots, and Children's Books in Print.
  • IRC General Collection: These titles are very similar to teacher resources, but these may be checked out. Subjects range from bibliographies to how-to books. Fast Backs are pamphlet type publications that cover many topics in a very concise manner.
  • Textbooks: These include K-12 textbooks on all subjects that may be checked out. Teacher editions and workbooks are also available.
  • State Adopted Textbooks: The State Department of Education has placed on open reserve all current textbooks from the state-adopted list. Although these textbooks are available to the general public, they are considered state property and are for library use only.
  • Juvenile: A collection of children's titles from infant to high school. Includes big books, non-fiction, fiction, and biographies. Caldecott, Newbery, King Award books are identified. Students of Children's Literature will easily find all genres of literature for their reading assignments. Journals

The IRC has issues of teacher idea journals that contain many suggestions for lesson plans. These are available in the Teacher Resource Section. They are for library use only. Titles included are below:

  • Cricket (for children)

Videos

The IRC has over 5,000 videotapes and DVDs for all disciplines and may be checked out for three days. They cover a wide variety of subjects and can be used for educational and entertainment purposes. There's an extensive collection of Commercial Aviation, Nursing, Art, Education, and juvenile titles. The videos are arranged by Dewey Decimal Classification and may be located by searching the on-line catalog using Power Search and selecting the item Type Video Cassette which is at the bottom of the list. Sound Recordings/Scores

The IRC has an extensive music collection (classical and popular) in a variety of formats. These may be accessed by searching the on-line catalog or the print catalog. Types include:

  • LP (long playing records, on reserve)
  • RD (records that may be checked out)
  • RT (audio-cassette)
  • DC (compact disc)
  • DAT (digital audio tape)
  • SCORES (printed musical composition)

The IRC offers equipment that allows patrons the capability of dubbing music from the above formats to an audio-cassette tape.

The IRC has a general collection of software designed to help teachers develop lesson plans. They are available for preview on the IRC computers. Sample titles include:

Services

  • Two Digital Cameras - Cameras are two mega pixels or higher and record still images or short videos on floppy diskettes or memory sticks. The cameras are available for a 3-day checkout period to DSU faculty, staff, and students. Software is available that will allow printing directly from the camera.
  • Conversions Plus - Allows patrons to open and convert almost any file type. Example: Converts Microsoft Works documents to Microsoft Word.
  • Image Editors - Use either Print Artist or Photoshop Elements to edit photographs or other images.
  • Iomega Zip Drive - Available for 3-day checkout, this drive can handle both 100 MB and 250 MB zip disks. Makes it easy to transport files anywhere you go by connecting to the USB port of the computer.
  • Ellison Die Cut Machines - Use these machines to cut out over 200 images for classroom use. Any material such as paper, foam, felt, etc. may be used.
  • Poster Printer - Makes 24" by 36" posters for $20.00 standard price & $15.00 if you show your DSU card.There is an charge of $3.00 for each additional foot.
  • Photocopy machine - 10¢ a page
  • Scanner - Digitize images or text into electronic files.
  • Typewriters - Fill out applications, forms, or envelopes
