Famiy & Consumer Sciences Scholarships

 

The Division of Family & Consumer Sciences offers five scholarships:    

 

Hamilton Child Development Scholarship

McQuagge Child Development Scholarship

Student Association of Family & Consumer Sciences (SAFCS) Scholarship

Mississippi Association of Family & Consumer Sciences Scholarship

Mary Stansel Harvey Professionalism Scholarship

 

There are also several scholarship opportunities through national and discipline-specific organizations.

 

Hamilton Child Development Scholarship

The Hamilton Scholarship is given by Mr. Albert G. Hamilton in honor of his parents, A.G. and Velma Shelton Hamilton. The Hamilton Scholarship is awarded to a student majoring in Family & Consumer Sciences with a concentration in Child Development at Delta State University.  Two scholarships of $600 each are awarded each year.  The two recipients will receive $300 at the beginning of the Fall and Spring semesters.  The recipients will be selected by committee.

 

Requirements:  

  • Be a freshman or a current student with a Concentration in Child Development
  • Maintain a GPA of 2.5(C+) or greater
  • Show active participation in FCS activities and clubs  

 

McQuagge Child Development Scholarship

The McQuagge Scholarship is given by Mrs. Atwell McQuagge in honor of her husband, Dr. Carl McQuagge.  The McQuagge Scholarship is awarded annually to either one or two students from Mississippi who are majoring in Family & Consumer Sciences with a concentration in Child Development at Delta State University.  The scholarship may be awarded to one or two students.  If two students receive the scholarship, each will receive $250 per semester.  If only one student is named, $500 will be given at the beginning of both the Fall and Spring semesters for a total of $1000 per year.  The recipients will be selected by committee.

 

Requirements:

  • Be a resident of Mississippi
  • Be a freshman or a current student with a Concentration in Child Development
  • Maintain a GPA of 2.5(C+) or greater
  • Have good moral character
  • Show active participation in FCS activities and clubs    

 

Student Association of Family & Consumer Sciences Scholarship

The Delta State Student Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (SAFCS) was established so that Family & Consumer Sciences majors could contribute fully to the growth and promotion of Family and Consumer Sciences and add to their own professional growth.  The Student Association of Family and Consumer Sciences Scholarship is awarded to an active member of SAFCS.  The application should be completed and returned to the Division by January of each year.              

 

Requirements:

  • SAFCS/MAFCS member of AAFCS
  • Family & Consumer Sciences Major
  • Be a Sophomore or Junior in good standing with a 2.5 overall GPA/3.0 GPA in FCS
  • Attendance and participation at local, state, and national conferences
  • Professional attitude  

 

Mississippi Association of Family & Consumer Sciences Scholarship

The Mississippi Association of Family and Consumer Sciences Scholarship is awarded yearly to one deserving student who is interested in pursuing a degree in any area of Family and Consumer Sciences.   The student will be selected on the basis of academic achievement and/or financial need.  Once the student is selected, the association will give the $500 award directly to the recipient as soon as the scholarship chair receives verification of enrollment.  Recognition will be given to the recipient at both the District MAFCS meeting and the State MAFCS Annual meeting.

 

Requirements:

  • Be a resident of Mississippi
  • Be a freshman or a current student
  • Show academic prowess or have a sincere financial need    

 

Mary Stansel Harvey Professionalism Scholarship

Mary Stansel Harvey was an assistant professor in the Home Economics Department from 1961 to 1979. She actively promoted the values of professionalism through classroom education and role modeling.  The purpose of the Mary Stansel Harvey Professionalism Scholarship is to promote and recognize the values of professionalism demonstrated so vividly by Mary Stansel Harvey throughout her professional career and in her personal life.  It is the intent of this scholarship to provide a mechanism for the ongoing promotion of the values of professionalism within the profession of family and consumer.  It is the spirit of this endowed scholarship to perpetuate the legacy of professionalism demonstrated by Mary Stansel Harvey.  The scholarship was endowed through the founding contributions made by Mary Stansel Harvey and her family.  This is an annual scholarship awarded in the Spring of each year.  The recipient will also receive a plaque. The selection of the recipient will be made at the discretion of the Division of Family and Consumer Sciences.

 

Requirements:  

  • Junior Class Member
  • Family & Consumer Sciences Major
  • Demonstration of professionalism both in academic and personal life
  • Show a commitment to the area of Family & Consumer Sciences through participation in a related professional organization and service to the Division
  • Have the potential to be an ongoing role model for the Profession
