MS Delta Service Corps

"To create positive change across the Delta through service." -MDSC Mission Statement

The Delta ServiceCorps Program (DSC) is part of a bi-state initiative between Arkansas and Mississippi, which is also a part of the national AmeriCorps community service program. Eighty percent of the program’s resources are used to serve children, youth, and their families. Delta communities have been strengthened as a result of Delta Service Corp’s efforts.

Mississippi Delta ServiceCorps Program (MDSC) is one of three AmeriCorps programs at the Center for Community and Economic Development at Delta State University. During the 2002-2003 service year, the MDSC is partnering with 47 service sites and school districts to place 116 AmeriCorps members in nine counties through-out the Mississippi Delta.

MDSC allows people of all ages and backgrounds to help pay for education in exchange for a year of service. AmeriCorps members meet community needs with services that range from tutoring students to working with parents, to supporting the development of children, and to helping communities help themselves.

MDSC members are divided into community site-based teams. Teams may be comprised of 6–15 members and are coordinated by an AmeriCorps Leader. The purposes of the teams are to:

  • Develop unity among members.

  • Provide support for Corps members who are serving at different agencies within the same community.

  • Provide opportunities for service and reflection by team members.

  • Provide a system of regional communication for the Program.

Mississippi Delta Service Corps/AmeriCorps members coordinated service projects throughout the Mississippi Delta for Make a Difference Day. “Make a Difference Day” is one of the four mandatory service projects which teams are responsible for planning activities in their communities. This is a national day of service that is scheduled each year in October for volunteers, volunteer organizations and communities to come together and make a difference in communities across the nation.
