Giving Caregivers Tools to Facilitate Language and Literacy Development

Mission

The goal of the program is to equip caregivers (parents and teachers) with information they can use to help their children and/or students in acquiring language and literacy skills.  The program also aims to involve undergraduate and graduate students in research related to caregiver training and child language assessment.

Program Description

The program includes workshops that are presented at various childcare facilities.  The workshops cover various topics related to language and literacy development.

Program Success

Approximately 100 caregivers have participated in this program. Caregivers have left the workshops feeling empowered to help their children.

Some comments following workshops include:

“Presentation was down to earth and easy to understand.”

“ It is making teachers realize how important we are in a child’s language development.”

“ I really enjoyed the reading strategies taught to me by you. The strategies opened my mind to countless ways on how to improve reading skills for my child. I feel every child and parent should implement the reading strategies daily when reading to their children.”

“I think the workshop went great. I learned to work harder with my students and parents.”
