The Student Success Center connects and actively partners with campus and community constituencies to maximize efforts to provide multi-faceted support to foster personal and educational development to ensure academic success. Constituencies include the College of Arts & Sciences, College of Business, College of Education, Robert E. Smith School of Nursing, Counseling and Testing Center, the Writing Center, Career Services, Student Life, Financial Aid, Undergraduate Admissions, Graduate and Continuing Studies, Housing and Residence Life, Registrar’s Office, Institutional Research, Athletics, Alumni Association, Faculty Senate, Staff Council, Academic Council, Student Business Services and the Cleveland/Bolivar County Chamber of Commerce. Goals include:

  • Actively partner with existing student support services (i.e. Counseling and Testing Center, Academic Support Lab) to identify at-risk students
  • Work closely with deans, division/department chairs and faculty to identify strategies for success
  • Coordinate workshops for faculty, staff and students to discuss involvement in student retention
  • Partner with Registrar’s Office to increase effectiveness of CAPP program for academic advisors
  • Work across campus to ensure the successful matriculation of international students at Delta State
  • Collaborate with Communications and Marketing to establish a social media campaign to actively promote student success
  • Establish a Student Success Center Advisory Board to increase retention efforts
  • Collaborate with Career Services and Delta State Alumni Association to encourage career development and alumni involvement.

Pilot Program: Student Success Coaches (Target Start Date: Fall 2012)

The Student Success Center provides services to address the social and emotional needs of students. Student Success Coaches, a pilot program focusing on approximately 60 DSU students enrolled in the CED 098/099 classes, will assist students in assessing and identifying interests and linking them with appropriate campus life activities and groups.

The students enrolled in the CED 098/099 classes are registered in two or more of the developmental classes and exhibit risk factors that can lead to academic withdrawal. Students who are considered at-risk include, but are not limited to: first generation college students, low socio-economic students, students who were enrolled in the Summer Developmental program and students on academic probation. Goals of the Student Success Coaches are:

  • Increase the retention rate from fall to spring for students enrolled in the CED classes
  • Offer one-on-one consultation to CED students
  • Assess the needs of the students in relation to all aspects of campus life
  • Provide students with a sense of belonging and connection to the university
