Summer Institutes
Eisenhower funded projects for summer institutes for mathematics teachers of middle school and high school mathematics were held on Delta State University campus during the month of June in 2001and 2002. The “No Child Left Behind” program funded the institutes in June 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009. The participants were selected from mathematics teachers in the Mississippi Delta Area. On the first day of the institute, the participants came to campus for an orientation session. Regular class sessions (8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.) were held Monday through Friday for the remainder of the month. Saturday follow-up workshops were held the following school year in the fall and spring in order to share classroom experiences. A wide variety of materials were used during the institutes: mathematics textbooks for grade 5- Geometry, Principles and Standards for School Mathematics (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, 2000), Mississippi Mathematics Framework (Mississippi Department of Education, 2000), and selected journal articles from Mathematics Teacher and Mathematics Teaching in the Middle Grades. The major purpose of the institutes was to assist teachers in acquiring knowledge and developing enthusiasm and excitement for teaching mathematics to their students. New teachers as well as “master teachers” worked together to insure collaborative and mentoring relationships for the teachers involved. Each participant received: a stipend for personal expenses, a wide variety of teaching materials for their classrooms, and six semester hours of credit for MAT 532, Special Topics in Mathematics. The project directors for the institutes held in 2001 - 2007, Dr. Rose Strahan and Dr. Stella Wear, are mathematics education professors from the Mathematics Department at Delta State University who shared teaching responsibilities for the mathematics content and methods. Key instructors from the College of Education at Delta State University, led activities in classroom management, assessment, and technology. The 2008 project director, Dr. Leslie Horton, a mathematics and mathematics education assistant professor from Delta State University, shared teaching responsibilities for the mathematics content and methods as well as the classroom activities with an LEA partner, Mrs. Lauren Zarandona, a teacher in the Mississippi Delta. Former directors (2000 - 2007), Dr. Rose Strahan and Dr. Stella Wear, served as consultants for the last Institute. Dr. Wear also led activities in technology. Dr. Leslie Horton also served as project director for the institute in 2009.
