Education Specialist

  • The Educational Specialist in Elementary Education program is designed to prepare quality elementary teachers who can provide effective instruction and provide leadership for fellow teachers at both the primary and intermediate levels.

  • Master’s degree with an earned overall GPA of at least 3.25 on the planned program of study from an institution fully accredited by one of the recognized accrediting agencies.*
  • Valid AA teaching license.*
  • Satisfactory writing proficiency score on one of the following:
    Praxis I Writing Test- minimum score of 174 on PPST or 320 on CBT National Teacher Examination (NTE) Communication Skills-minimum score of 653 ~ Graduate Record Examination (GRE) Verbal Test- minimum score of 370 ~ Miller Analogies Test (MAT)- minimum score of 30 ~ Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) Essay Test- minimum score of 3 ~ Collegiate Assessment of Academic Proficiency (CAAP) Writing Essay Test- minimum score of 3
  • Passing score on PRAXIS II, Elementary Education: Curriculum, Instruction, & Assessment (K-5), or Elementary Education: Curriculum, Instruction, & Assessment (4-8); or passing score on test in Elementary Education approved by Mississippi State Department of Education.

*Applicants must submit this evidence before provisional or full admission is granted.

Evidence of all four requirements must be satisfied before obtaining Full Admission status. Provisional admission status can be obtained with satisfaction of the GPA and the license requirement. However, all other requirements must be submitted within the first 12 hours of course work. Applicants who do not submit evidence of all four requirements by the end of their first 12 hours of course work will not be allowed to complete the program.

All Educational Specialist candidates must have credit for the following courses or the equivalent:
_____ EPY 601- Psychology of Learning
_____ CEL 610- Effective Instruction in the Elementary School
_____ CEL 611- Classroom Management
_____ CRD 624- Literacy Instruction in the Elementary School

Any of the credits that are not transferred upon admission to the Educational Specialist program must be added to the candidate’s Program of Study.
