What is DAWP?

Delta Area Writing Project makes up part of a larger network, the National Writing Project (NWP). NWP has over 200 writing project sites throughout the U.S., Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. Each site is based and housed at a university. At Delta State, the DAWP is housed in the College of Education and supported by the Delta Area Association for Improvement of Schools. DAWP is one of seven Mississippi writing project sites.

What is our Mission?

Since its inception in 1986, the mission of Delta Area Writing Project has been to improve writing and learning in Delta area schools. As an affiliate site of the National Writing Project, we share their mission to improve literacy instruction and improve learning in the nation's schools through a teachers teaching teachers philosophy. We recognize the primary importance of teacher knowledge, expertise, and leadership. We seek to promote exemplary instruction of writing in every classroom through our extensive network of teachers in our service area. DAWP and NWP value diversity-our own as well as that of the students, their families, and their communities. The Institute recognizes that lives and practices are enriched by interaction with diversities of race, gender, class, ethnicity, and language.

What does DAWP offer?
The Delta Area Writing Project can give teachers what they need most to help their students:
