Students must meet the following requirements to be admitted to the Elementary Education program.

Junior year status
Acceptable scores on the Praxis I
An general education GPA of 2.5 or higher
Recommendation from elementary education faculty

Elementary Education includes course work, field experiences, and practica. The K-6 program includes a minimum of 44 core subject hours, 2 areas of concentration (18 hours), and an interdisciplinary program of study (Classroom Management, Reading, and Special Education).
Program Checklist
Concentration courses are focused subject areas in the program of study. Students must obtain 18 or more hours in at least two concentration areas. To obtain supplemental endorsements, students may take 21 hours in these subject areas, achieving a C or better.

Each student who is admitted to Delta State University will be assigned an advisor. Advisee assignments may be obtained from the main office in Ewing 384, or at 662-846-4370. All elementary education advisors have offices on the third floor of Ewing where students will find posted charts of office hours, phone numbers, and class schedules.

Students may schedule a conference with an advisor via phone call, email, or by leaving a message on the office door. Students must schedule an appointment with their advisors to register or pre-register. Advisors are also more than willing to address students’ questions or concerns.

FAQs

How will I know what to take and in what order?
A current Delta State University Bulletin (catalog) should be the first thing that a prospective or new student reads. This bulletin will have information not only about the Elementary Education Program, but also about the University as a whole. In addition to the catalog, students may access Course Checklist. Transfer students must obtain a transcript evaluation for elementary education from the Office of the Registrar. Contact the faculty/staff for any further detail.

What are concentration courses?
Students must obtain 18 or more hours in two of the following areas. Obtaining 21 hours of C or better leads to a supplemental endorsement.
Art Education, English, Foreign Language, Physical Education, Mathematics, Music Education, General Science, Social Studies, Foreign Language (one language), Special Education, Math/Computers, Science/Computers
Special Education and Reading require a specified program for supplemental add-on endorsement.

What is required to be admitted to Teacher Education?
Actual admission cannot be obtained until the junior year. Admission requirements include passage of PRAXIS I, having a 2.5 GPA on courses designated as General Education on the “Course of Study” sheet, and being recommended by the faculty in Elementary Education. Your advisor can address further questions about PRAXIS tests.
