All entering music majors and minors are required to demonstrate their knowledge of music theory/notation and proficiency in musicianship. The first week of a the fall semester (and spring semester when appropriate) is a week for diagnostics in the theory courses to ascertain the level and readiness of potential majors for the music theory offerings. The link above provides information that explains this process and details what is expected to be mastered at each level. Exams can also be used for advance-placement upon consultation with the instructors and/or chair of the department.
