SUMMER RESEARCH EXPERIENCES

The MAMP Program encourages every student to participate in a Summer Research Experience.  Research opportunities are posted outside Walters 179 at the beginning of the Spring Semester or as they are received. Apply for positions that you are interested in as soon as possible for greatest chance of getting chosen.

Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Program

This program is available at many universities and institutions across the country. Most of the programs are 8-10 weeks long and provide a stipend of $3000-$4500, travel, tuition, room, and board! You may get a chance to travel to another part of the country or world and participate in current scientific research. The website is http://www.nsf.gov/crssprgm/reu/reu_search.cfm. You may search it by topic or by location.

Long Island, NY - www.cshl.edu/URP - Summer Undergraduate Research Program at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, Dr. James Watson, Chancellor. Accepted sophomore or junior students receive room, board, $4000, and the chance of a lifetime being involved in important scientific work with well-known and respected scientists.

The American Chemical Society maintains a list of chemistry summer research positions.
Many positions related to chemistry are also posted. To locate undergraduate research, internship, and other summer work in the chemical sciences, visit the ACS postings.

Local Opportunities

 

  • USDA and the Mississippi State Extension both run expansive research facilities right here in the Delta. Some of the topics of research include: Biological control of pests, catfish genetics, cotton ginning research, crop genetics and production, insect management, and weed science.  To apply for one of the Extension positions, you need to visit www.jobs.msstate.edu and complete the support staff application. Print it out and deliver it, with your resume, to Human Resources, Delta Research and Extension Center, P.O. Box 197, Stoneville, MS 38776. Make sure that your cover letter includes the information that you are looking for a student summer position. The USDA positions are posted at www.usajobs.opm.gov.
  • Summer Research Institute for Undergraduates - for undergraduates in MS through the AGEM program

  • Baxter Healthcare in Cleveland, MS offers internships for science students after completion of their sophomore years. If interested, send your resume with a letter of interest stating your major and chemistry courses that you have taken to:
