Sandy Rakes-Pedersen, Ph.D.
Professor of Elementary Education

A native New Yorker, Dr. Sandy Rakes-Pedersen earned a Bachelor of Science in elementary education from the University of Tampa. She later earned a Master of Science and Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Southern Mississippi.
Dr. Rakes has wide experience in the field of education, ranging from classroom teacher, to Elementary Education Coordinator at Troy State/Bay Minette, to visiting professor in Hays, Kansas and Bowling Green, Kentucky. She also has worked as an educational consultant for a major textbook company and as vice president of Junior Achievement in Memphis.
In 1993, Dr. Rakes joined the elementary education faculty at Delta State University. She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in the elementary education curriculum, where she emphasizes pragmatic teaching ideas based on evidence based best practices.
