Career Tip: Professional Image

The simple fact is that we allow our 1st impressions form ideas about people.  Make sure that before you meet your potential employer for the 1st time you are presenting your best self.  Here are a few tips:

  1. IMAGE IS EVERYTHING! – No where is this old adage more true than in the job search.   From your 1st encounter with your potential employer, you should dress to impress.  This means no t-shirts, shorts, flip flops, caps/hats, etc.  A great rule to follow:  dress like you already have the job!  A good 1st impression might lead to an interview…
  2. GOT AN INTERVIEW????  THINK…GEORGE BUSH!  – Would Valdimer Putin take W seriously if he showed up in the oval office in jeans, t-shirt, and flops?  I don’t think so.  Show them you mean business.  If you are asked to come in for an interview, wearing a suit is a great way to show how serious you are about the position.  For both men and women, suits in blacks, grays, browns, or navy blues are your best bet.  Have your suit professionally tailored and cleaned before the big day.  Traditional and conservative is the image you want to project, so stick with muted colors and traditional prints for your accessories (ties, shirts, etc.)
  3. CLEAN IT UP! – Before the big day, take a shower and use deodorant.  An offensive smell is a great way to garner the nickname “Stinky” before you even get your 1st paycheck.  Also, a few days before the interview go into the shop/salon for a trim, and shave!  Clip your nails and brush your chops.  When you walk into the interview, you want to smell as fresh as the morning dew…not last night’s Chinese food.
  4. MIND YOUR MANNERS! – Like my Dad always said, “Boy…is your jaw broke?  Well, how about a ‘please and thank you’?”  Be appreciative!  The employer is taking time out of his/her busy schedule to talk to you…thank them!  Also, always address them by Mr. or Ms, unless invited to use 1st names.  A simple “no sir / yes ma’am” goes a long way with employers.

Pride in yourself implies pride in your work!  Don’t let a sloppy image cost you the job.  Drop by the Career Center for more advice on your professional image.  Best wishes to you for a successful job search.  Let us know how we can help.
