QUALIFICATIONS (all positions included below): Person must have a strong interest in working in nature center with a diverse audience. Some teaching experience is preferred, along with good communication and public speaking skills. Applicant should be able to lift at least 50lbs and work outdoors in sometimes hot/ humid weather. Naples Nature Discovery Center – Environmental Education, Intern:
Intern must care for live exhibits which house over 125 species of local wildlife (including marine/freshwater aquaria, reptiles, amphibians, and small mammals), and must work with protected wildlife. Applicant will teach ecological programs for audiences of all ages and assist in leading an after-school program for underprivileged or at risk children. Also, position requires interpretive tours, assisting in lecture series, school programs, special events and field programs. Applicant must be at least a senior in college with environmental science/ ecology, education or comparable background.
Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, Intern:
Intern will assist with injured, sick, and orphaned Florida wildlife along with maintenance of facilities. Position includes a wide range of rehabilitation activities (i.e. animal rescue, emergency first aid, daily feedings, cage cleaning, public relations, special projects). Position requires at least a six-month commitment. Applicant must be at least a senior in college with environmental science/ ecology, education or comparable background
Environmental Science Field Research, Intern:
Intern will assist the Environmental Science staff in a variety of research projects that may include wetland assessments, water quality monitoring, mangrove research, etc. Person will be responsible for additional duties as assigned such as data entry, sample processing and equipment maintenance. Only a six-month position available. Applicant must have a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record. A BS or BA degree in a scientific field is required.
Environmental Policy Intern:
Intern will assist department staff in researching environmental issues (local, state, federal) such as tracking and assisting in daily admin duties, as well as writing research summaries and policy position statements. Position may include opportunities to plan/develop reports and other related community outreach activities. Applicant will also have the opportunity to be a part of relevant meetings of the county and city governments about issues of interest. Must have a BS or BA in environmental policy or the natural sciences, and a knowledge of spreadsheets and word. Must be able to travel with valid driver’s license. GIS proficiency is a plus.
Environmental Science, Sea Turtle Research (summer 2009):
Intern will monitor beaching in the mornings for sea turtle nesting activity (may be up to 5 miles of beach). Also, some monitoring at night. Three available interns from April-August 2009. Applicant must be a senior in college in one of the biological fields or in the environmental sciences; a BS or BA preferred. A working knowledge of ATV operation, motorboats, and small engines is an asset. Responsibilities include patrolling, caging nests, tagging nesting females, and monitoring nest-batching.
Environmental Education/Summer Day Camp (summer 2009)
Intern will teach a variety of lessons in sciences and ecology, both on and off site, at an 8-week education intensive summer camp, assist counselors with program development, and program delivery to grades k-8th graders. Intern will serve as a responsible counselor and positive role model for campers, which will include leading games, and crafts and field trips to area wildlife locations such as beaches, swamps, and parks. Must be available from May 21 to August 8, 2009. Intern must have certifications in First Aid, CPR and life-saving or ability to obtain.
