Program Overview
Delta State University, a regional university in Cleveland, Mississippi, serves as an educational and cultural center of the Mississippi Delta. Among the excellent graduate programs offered at DSU are two offered through Counselor Education within the Division of Counselor Education and Psychology; a Master’s of Education Degree in either Clinical Mental Health Counseling (currenly accredited by CACREP as Community Counseling) or School Counseling. These degree programs are accredited by CACREP (Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs) a specialized accrediting body that promotes the advancement of quality counselor education programs. Each faculty member is a Licensed Professional Counselor and National Certified Counselor; committed to making a professional and academic contribution through active involvement in their professional organizations and personal growth.

The Counselor Education Program emphasizes excellence in instruction by providing a friendly environment, small classes, and opportunities for students to develop intellectually, socially, and professionally. Our students represent a broad range of cultural, socio-economic, and ethnic backgrounds. The small student-faculty ratio provides opportunities for intellectual interaction through formal and informal discussions, professional presentations, creative teaching environments, and a comprehensive support program of advising to enhance students’ development and successful completion of their chosen course of study. Faculty members provide a balance of challenge and support through instruction, supervision, and mentoring activities.

The American Counseling Association (ACA) is the national organization which defines professional counseling as the application of mental health, psychological or human development principles, through cognitive, affective, behavioral or systematic interventions, strategies that address wellness, personal growth, or career development, as well as pathology. Our graduates receive an excellent educational foundation to meet these standards, and full-time students may complete their program of choice in five semesters. For detailed informaton about the Counselor Education Program, please see our student handbooks.

 Mission Statement
The faculty and staff of the Delta State University Counselor Education Program, through teaching, training, supervision, and experiential activity, develop ethical, competent, and culturally sensitive counselors who are prepared to work in school or community settings. Program faculty seek to strengthen the profession by modeling for students the professional expectation of continued growth and learning, interpersonal awareness, and practical application of sound principles and practices in their work as professional counselors.
