Professional Development Calendar

Understanding by Design

Understanding by design is a new program which the Mississippi Department of Education is promoting.  It was written by Dr. Grant Wiggins and is especially tailored for Mississippi.  Understanding by Design focuses around students' really understanding what they have learned and the ability to transfer or apply knowledge.  It focuses on essential questions, big ideas, and valuable assessments.  The curriculum framer is an online set of curriculum guides including all components of the math and language arts frameworks for Mississippi.  In this training participants will gain knowledge of how to teach for understanding andhow to use the framer to gain valuable lesson plans. This session carries 0.6 CEU credit for teachers.  Enrollment is strictly limited to 25 participant for this session and will be accepted on a first come-first serve basis.

Surf's Up!  Finding Health Information on the Internet

This is a three hour workshop for librarians, school librarians, library staff, teachers, community health workers, community health advocates, and the general public.  An additional two hour afternoon session for 0.5 CEU credit will be provided through the Mississippi Library Commission.  You must register for both sessions to obtain the 0.5 CEU credit.  During this workshop you will learn criteria for evaluating health information websites, how to find reputable health information online, advanced searching techniques in MedlinePlus and several EBSCOhost consumer health databases through MAGNOLIA, and issues related to providing health information reference services.  You must register for this workshop by calling 662-846-4431.

Inclusion:  A Shared Responsibility

Bring a team from your school or just yourself to discuss the latest on creating classroom communities that foster success for all students.  The day will include time for you to problem solve with other professionals and to participate in breakout sessions on current issues in inclusive classrooms.  Topics will include not only how to survive, but how to thrive, by using strategies related to a) utilizing the inclusion teacher and paraprofessional in the classroom, b) co-teaching and teaming, c) response to intervention and 3 tier instruction, d) culturally responsive teaching, universal design for learning, e) differentiated instructional strategies in academic areas, and f) classroom management strategies in the inclusive classroom.

American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer

  This session provides professional rescuers (those with a duty to respond) the skills needed to respond appropriately to respiratory and cardiac emergencies.  Participates will also learn the skills and knowledge needed to provide care for victims of sudden cardiac arrest through the safe use of an automated external defibrillator (AED).  A fee of $10 is charged for this session and will be collected upon completion of the session.  This session carries 0.5 CEUs for teachers.

Depth of Knowledge! What You Need to Know

Introduction to World Geography

The new state requirement that all high-school students take the Introduction to World Geography course begins in the Fall of 2008.  This session will provide variable depth of coverage to help prepare teachers to teach the geography course.  Teachers with or without experience teching geography will benefit from the workshops and be able to improve student achievement in this subject.  This workshop can also help history teachers incorporate geography into their courses.  This session will carry 0.6 CEU credits for teachers.

Stock Market Game

Mississippi School Closing Table Top Excercise

The world has experienced three influenza pandemics within the last one hundred years-1918, 1957, and 1968.  The 1918 pandemic was the most fatal event in human history killing an estimated 100 million people world wide.  Could this happen again?  The answer to this question and many other will be explored during this session.  The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention considers this subject of such significance that it entered into cooperative agreements with the health departments in each state to deliver a series of excersises designed to aid in planning for an influenza pandemic in the context of the potential of closing schools as a primary community mitigation measure.  The Mississippi School Closing Table Top Exercise is sponsored by the Mississippi State Department of Health and will be delivered by the South Central Center for Public Health Preparedness of the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Public HealthThis session carries 0.6 CEU credits for teachers.

Differentiated Instruction

MS Language Arts Framework K-3 Training

This one day training provides an introduction to the newly revised MS Language Arts Framework 2006 for Kindergarten through 3rd grade.  The training includes an overview of the organization of the MLAF, an explanation of the competencies and objectives for each grade level, examples of teaching strategies, and suggested assessments for the areas of reading, language arts and writing.  The MLAF training addresses what students should know and do in English, language arts, and reading classrooms.

Reading Instructional Intervention Model

Formally the 3-Tier Reading Model holds promise for reducing the overall reading problems by providing intensive early intervention for the students most at-risk for reading difficulty.  It consists of three tiers of levels of reading instruction.  Tier 1: Core Classroom Reading Instruction, Tier II: Supplemental Instruction, Tier III: Instruction for Intensive Intervention.  This model will make a highly significant contribution to the knowledge base on preventing reading disabilities through effectively early reading instruction.  This session carries 0.6 CEU credits for teachers or 5.0 SEMI credits for career level administrators.

An Exploration in Fluency

MS Superintendents Academy

The Superintendents Academy provides opportunities for any MS educator to explore the most crucial leadership position in American education, the role of the superintendent.  Delta State University, Nissan and the Delta Area Association for Improvement of Schools designed the format to allow participants to engage in meaningful interaction with presenters, while also allowing time to reflect on their goals and develop strategies to achieve them.  Sessions are held over a 12-month period which includes one week on campus and five additional sessions spaced throughout the year.  Space is limited, so early registration is recommended.

Requirements: $50.00 non-refundable program fee for Summer Institute

The address is 423 S. Line Street.  At the intersection of Hwy 51 and Hwy 8 go north 0.2 miles (This will be the second redlight).  Turn right on Fairfield.  Go 0.6 miles and  turn left on Fourth Street.  Go one block and you will see the GLAD (Grenada Adult Education Center) building.  It is a former school.  Parking is on the street in front or at the side of the building.  

Yazoo City Public Service Commission Building

Take Broadway Street into the Yazoo City business district.  Turn south on Mound St. at KFC, and go one block.  The Yazoo Public Service Commission Office Building is on the right facing Mound Street.  The sign on the building reads PSC.  Do not go to the building with the large PUBLIC SERVICE COMMISSION sign on the front.  Please park across the street.    

Jacob Conference Center (formally known as the Delta Room), Ewing Hall, Delta State University

At the intersection of Hwy 61 and Hwy 8, turn west.  Go through the Cleveland business district and on to the main DSU campus.  The Ewing Building is located at the intersection of  Hwy. 8 and Fifth Avenue.  The Building is on the left. Coahoma Community College Industrial Training Center in Clarksdale  

At the intersection of the HWY 61 bypass and Hwy 49 turn north (toward Clarksdale).  The Coahoma Community College Industrial Training Center is about ¼ mile on the right.

The address is 755 Hwy. 27 South.  The professional development is in the Multi-purpose building.  

Carver School in Raymond

The address is 560 Port Gibson Street.  Go out of Jackson on Hwy 18 to Raymond.  Go past Raymond and Raymond High School. Turn right on Port Gibson Street and go about ¾ mile.  You can’t miss Carver School on the right.

Turn south from Highway 82 at Moorhead.  Go on through Moorhead and the MDCC campus.  The Stauffer Wood Administration Building is the last MDCC building on the left.

The address is 616 Sycamore Ave in Greenwood.  Whittington Park is bordered on the south by Highway 82 and Sycamore Avenue on the west.  The Career and Technical Center is just off of Highway 82 and across Sycamore Avenue from Whittington Park.

 

Directions to the Yazoo City School District Central Office

 Turn west from Highway 49 at the Kangaroo store on to 15th Street.  Drive west approximately 4 blocks to Calhoun Avenue.  Turn south at Blacks store on to Calhoun.  The Yazoo City School District Central Office is approximately 3 blocks on the right.  The address is 1133 Calhoun Avenue.

From I-55 turn west onto Highway 22 (also known as West Peace Street).  Pass KFC, Bumpers, and G.A. Carmichael Clinic.  Make the first right (next to G.A.
