International Health Planning
Pre-Arrival and Arrival at DSU
International students frequently encounter problems with health care in the United States because of unfamiliarity with the system, non-western beliefs, difficulty with English, as well as high cost. Additionally, students may discover that important health records, including immunization information and reports have been left at home resulting in needless delay in registration for classes.
Knowledge and thoughtful pre-departure planning may prevent problems. The following are suggestions for pre-departure planning for health related issues:
· All new students should arrive with an English translation copy of their medical record. If the English translation is not available, a copy of the original record will still be helpful. Provision of continuity of care for complex medical problems can be greatly eased by a complete medical history.
· Cost and scheduling factors make some routine medical care difficult in the United States. Dental, optometric, gynecologic and routine medical care should be obtained from the students' regular health care providers before coming to the U.S. An extra pair of eyeglasses or contact lenses or the original optometric prescription would be extremely useful in the event of damage or loss.
· Prescriptions for treatment of chronic conditions should be brought to the United States in a supply of at least 3 months. Contact with a physician should be made as soon as possible upon arrival to obtain similar prescriptions in this country. Some prescription medications sold in foreign countries are not available or FDA approved in the U.S. However, a pharmacist in the country of origin may be able to mail the medication to the student on a periodic basis.
PRE-DEPARTURE PLANNING LIST
· Health Insurance is required of all international students. If you are already covered while studying in the U.S., you must bring proof of insurance, and complete details of coverage. It must be full coverage. Bring medical records for pre-existing conditions or complex medical history
· Have routine medical care prior to departure: teeth, eyes, routine check-ups
· Bring a supply of prescriptions for at least 3 months for students with chronic conditions. (See above)
YOU MAY NOT REGISTER FOR CLASSES UNTIL THE UNIVERSITY IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS ARE COMPLETED.
