Percussion Symposium April 21, 2007

The Delta State University Department of Music is hosting a Percussion Symposium Saturday, April 21, 2007 on the campus of DSU. Our guest clinicians will be Drs. Kyle Hill and Jim Moore from Pearl River Community College. Dr. Kyle Hill is currently in his 14th year at Pearl River College where he teaches freshman music theory, music appreciation, applied percussion, and directs the “Spirit of the River” Marching Band. After receiving the Associates in Arts degree from Jones Junior College, Dr. Hill received the Bachelor of Music Education, Master of Music Education, and Doctor of Music Education degrees from The University of Southern Mississippi. Prior to his arrival at PRCC, Hill served as Director of Bands at Lumberton High School and as Associate Director at Oak Grove High School. Dr. Hill has judged numerous DCI competitions for Drum Corps Midwest and Drum Corps South as well as individual competitions for the Mississippi Percussive Arts Society. He has served on the executive council for the Southeast Mississippi Band Director’s Association and currently serves as President of the Mississippi Junior/Community College Band Director's Association.

 

Dr. James Moore serves as an academic counselor at PRCC. Dr. Moore earned his bachelor's, master's, and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg. He also completed a pre-doctoral internship in pediatric psychology at the Johns Hopkins University Medical Center. For 10 years, Dr. Moore was the Director of Percussion Studies for the Petal Band Program in Petal, MS. During his tenure, the Petal High School Marching Percussion Ensemble consistently earned superior and “best in class” honors at festivals and competitions throughout the South. Near the end of his tenure at Petal, the band regularly led the state in the number of performers selected for the Mississippi Lion’s All-State Band. Dr. Moore has taught percussion privately for nearly 15 years with over 40 of his students selected to the Mississippi Lion’s All-State Band and well over 200 students selected to various district honor bands. As a performer, Dr. Moore was a three-year member of the Mississippi Lion’s All-State Band, serving as principal percussionist and section leader in 1990. Dr. Moore was also the Mississippi Percussive Arts Society state snare drum champion in 1989 He is also the author of three rudimental snare drum solos: Autobahn, The Tyger, and Flamchop. Dr. Moore has studied with Jim Hamilton, John Wooton, Marty Hurley, Kyle Hill, and Sherman Hong. Dr. Moore will be presenting a master class on rudimental snare drum. If you have any students that wish to play for him, please fill out the attached form and mail or fax back to me.

 

Also, you will hear concerts from the DSU Percussion Ensemble, DSU Steel Band, Gulf Coast Community College Percussion Ensemble, and the Desoto Central High School Percussion Ensemble.

 

All events are free and open to the public. Door prizes will be given away at the end of the day.
