Delta State University Annual Mathematics Tournament
The Sixth Annual Mathematics Tournament was held on February 24, 2006. One hundred thirty students from nineteen Mississippi schools participated in the tournament. Each student took a written test, competed in teams of four in a ciphering round, and then participated in math relays. Awards were given to the top scoring individuals on the written test as well the top scoring teams. Tournament T-shirts were given as prizes for the afternoon relays. The top two individuals were awarded O. W. Reily Leadership Scholarships.
The tournament was a joint effort of mathematics faculty and DSU students. The mathematics majors helped write questions, monitor activities, grade tests, and score ciphering points. Many student volunteers from the elementary education mathematics classes pitched in to make the day a success. They helped by serving as student escorts for the trip to the cafeteria for lunch, by assisting Bill Moses with photographs, and by monitoring ciphering activities and the afternoon relays.
Attendance at the tournament has continued to increase each year. The first tournament only had thirty-six participants from nine schools. We are pleased to bring so many mathematically talented students to our campus. We hope that they choose DSU for their college experience.
