- Remember the main reason you are here is to get an education.
- Accept responsibility for your own education.
- Don't blame others for your academic and personal problems.
- Understand that being a full-time student is a full-time job.
- Attend class.
- Sit near the front and participate in class.
- Use the course syllabus.
- Try to stay ahead of the professor in your reading.
- Study even when there is "no homework."
- Do some of your studying in a study group.
- Always be aware of your academic standing and the consequences of actions such as withdrawing from class.
- Get to know your professors and fellow students.
- Accept constructive criticism.
- Budget time wisely. Do things sooner rather than later.
- Realize that the University has rules, and understand what those rules are.
- Accept the fact that there is nothing wrong with being confused at first.
- Make your own decisions.
- Ignore rumors.
- Be patient.
- Learn your way around campus.
- Locate and use University resources.
- Write and call home often, even when you don't need money.
- Ask for help when you need it. We all need help at some time.
- Safeguard your mental and physical well-being.
- Take some classes not because they are required, but because they are in an area of interest.
- Understand that any number of majors can lead to your desired career and that a particular major can lead to numerous careers.
- If you are in a pre-professional field, plan for some alternatives in case you cannot gain immediate acceptance into a graduate or professional school.
- Maintain high standards of personal conduct.
- Get involved with a group, such as the majors' club in your academic department.
- Become a member of the Delta State family.
