Clean Up Content from Other Sources

When you paste content from other sources, you often get baggage—markup from the source application—that you don't need and that may complicate your editing activity in SBT. Three options for cleaning source text involve Notepad, SBT's Code Sweeper and editing HTML tags.

Use Notepad
The safest approach is to use Notepad as an intermediate step.
  1. Open Notepad ( Start ’ Programs ’ Accessories ’ Notepad ).
  2. Select and copy the source text in its native application (Word, FrontPage, browser page, etc.).
  3. Paste the copied text into the Notepad document. This removes all tags, leaving you with plain text.
  4. Select and copy the text in the Notepad document.
  5. Paste the copied text in the SBT page.
  6. Format the text using SBT's tools.

Use the Code Sweeper Function
An alternative is using the Code Sweeper function.

  1. Determine how much content you need swept.
    • If you wish to sweep the full page, you need not select anything.
    • If you wish to sweep a portion of the page, select it.

  2. Click the Code Sweeper icon Code Sweeper Icon.

  3. If you selected text in Step 1, the Selection button is preconditioned. If you did not select any text, the Selection option isn't shown. You may change your mind and click the Entire Document button.

  4. Chose by clicking, what type of sweep you wish to be done:
    • All HTML Tags leaves you with unformatted text.
    • Microsoft Word mark-up clears the formatting markup from Word selections.
    • Font Tags removes font markup, eliminating text attributes such as typeface, bold, italic, color, size, etc.
    • The remaining options are beyond the scope of this tutorial.

  5. Click OK.

Code Sweeper Example

A few sweeping generalizations:

  • It's generally a good idea to save the page before you paste content from another source. If, after you paste the content and the code sweep causes problems, you merely click Reset to return to the previously saved content.

  • You may need to run two sweeps— Microsoft Word mark-up and Font Tags —to achieve the desired results.

  • Consider All HTML Tags a sweep of last resort; the resulting content has no markup. All headings and other legitimate markup are lost.

  • The last resort is to toggle to the HTML editing mode using the HTML editing icon  and clean it up yourself, which can be daunting if you are unfamiliar with HTML markup.
