Bachelor of Science in Social Science - Emphasis Sociology

Specializing in Sociology at Delta State University

The Bachelor of Science in Social Sciences degree offers a specialty in Sociology.  Students opting for this concentration will take the general education requirements, the core social science courses (two courses each in geography, political science and sociology), the special degree requirements (foreign language or computer science, two science electives, research methods and statistics, and the English Writing Exam) and seven junior- or senior-level sociology courses, focusing on social theory, social problems, marriage and the family, race and ethnicity, leadership, group dynamics, community development, delinquency, social stratification, organization and change, demography and a variety of other topics of interest to sociologists.

Students that complete the concentration in sociology will develop a grounded understanding of how and why people organize themselves into groups, how these groups and organizations function, and how they affect the daily lives of individuals.  In addition, many courses apply these general theories to topics such as work, sport, the environment, health care and religion.  A sociology degree prepares students to teach, to work as administrators in a variety of organizations, and is excellent preparation for graduate and professional programs in law, public administration, business, and the social sciences.
