The sounds of Africa will be ringing through the Mississippi Delta on Thursday, November 29 as The Delta State University Department of Music presents the DSU Community Drumming and Dance Experience in Concert. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Jobe Hall Auditorium. The recital is free and open to the public.
The concert will include traditional and contemporary drumming, dance, and song from Ghana, Guinea, Senegal, and Zimbabwe. Wally Wooten, a Delta area djembe drummer, will be featured in a special performance of Lindjin.
The group, led by DSU music faculty Karen Fosheim and Josh Armstrong, enjoys the challenge of exploring the rich culture and tradition of African music. Fosheim stated “This performance highlights the amazing range of talents of our Delta State students. The complexity of the African rhythmic structures requires us to take our musical skills to a new level. The focus and precision gained is something which students can use to enhance their traditional musical study.”
