The AmeriCorps*VISTA program at Delta State University’s Center for Community and Development provides a priceless opportunity for individuals to become totally immersed in community projects that start, strengthen, or expand programs, systems or services that help move residents out of poverty. The program serves as an active link between poverty-stricken citizens and sustainability measures for economic growth.
There are now openings with non-profit host site agencies focusing on workforce development, financial asset development, and community health outreach-including developing community gardens, in Bolivar, Carroll, Coahoma, Grenada, Holmes, Leflore, Montgomery, Quitman, and Washington counties. These agencies are seeking applicants with developed skills in communications, community organization, computers/technology, conflict resolution, fundraising/grant writing, leadership, public speaking, recruitment, and youth development. Interested parties should complete and submit an online application at www.americorps.gov to be considered for membership. Once you have completed the application, you must submit the online application directly to the MDSC/AmeriCorps*VISTA program.
Upon becoming an AmeriCorps*VISTA member, individuals will receive hands-on training to effectively serve in this capacity to strengthen and enhance efforts to eliminate poverty. Members are also the recipients of substantial benefits. These benefits include a living allowance paid bi-weekly, health and life insurance, and work-related travel reimbursement. Contingent with service completion, members may choose either a $5,550 education award or a $1,500 cash stipend.
