World-class heavy metal artists to perform at Delta State

Guest artists Dr. Demondrae Thurman, left, and Chester Schmitz, will perform free concerts Saturday in the Recital Hall of the Bologna Performing Arts Center.

The Delta State University Department of Music proudly announces Tuba-Euphonium Day 2015, Delta Tuba-Euph Fest! The event will be held on campus April 18 and includes two free concert performances by world-renowned guest artists.

Featured guests for this special day-long event will be Chester Schmitz, principal tuba (retired), Boston Symphony Orchestra, and international euphonium soloist, Dr. Demondrae Thurman, associate professor of low brass at Samford University and founding member of the Sotto Voce Quartet.

As part of the festival, both artists will be performing solo recitals. Thurman will be performing a euphonium recital at 11:30 a.m., and Mr. Schmitz will perform a tuba recital at 3:30 p.m. They will be assisted on piano by Delta State professor, Dr. Kumiko Shimizu, associate professor of music. Both performances will take place in the Recital Hall of the Bologna Performing Arts Center.

Thurman will perform works by Jerry Owen, Barbara York, James Curnow and more.

Schmitz’s performance will feature great operatic arias of Puccini, Verdi, Saint-Saens and Donizetti.
